    Ants in camera

Just over a month ago, after putting it off for years I finally bought myself a new Nikon D7100. Absolutely brilliant camera and I've been very happy with some of the results. A very big step up for me and a huge learning curve ahead.

Last weekend I took the camera out to try for some sunset shots. The camera hadn't been used since the previous weekend, where it was perfect. I noticed when I went to live view that there were black splotches all over screen. I checked the lens, clean.

I only have one lens, so never take lens off. the camera is supposedly weather resistant. If water struggles to get in how do ants get in.

I returned the camera to dealer where I bought it and they sent it off for sensor clean. I was contacted today by repairers, camera had ants in it and they have caused problems. $210 to get camera fumigated, cleaned reassembled and tested.

According to them this is not unheard of and happens frequently.
How do the ants get in the camera? She couldn't answer that.

I hope they do get it good again, its a very nice (expensive) camera to lose so soon.

did they say how many where in there?

Thats Odd you could only assume that if you have not removed the lesne since you have had it that there must of been ants/eggs in either the body or the lense before you mated them togetherr

They have 3 ants bagged to show me. I'm not sure of the life cycle of ants. Although what you suggest is probably possible I find it unlikely. As unlikely as ants getting into a supposedly weather resistant camera.

Camera Clinic who are doing the repair did say it's fairly common. Ants and little bugs, which she laughingly said they've nicknamed "shutterbugs". Hell of a funny when it's not your camera/money.

    It's a mystery

Nikon camera and I'm assuming a Nikon lens. You'd think they'd be alright.

The 'shutterbugs' could have been introduced via the body methinks. It would be a simple matter for baby bugs to navigate through the gaps inside the body through to the lens. And, I'm guessing with the modern electronics in cameras and lenses there are small gaps in construction.

In that case the likely culprits (assuming you didn't leave the body on an ants nest last time you used it) are the battery and memory card. Are you using a brand name or generic memory card?

It would be interesting to find out what customs think of this, it seems as if the bugs might be imported!

Brand new Nikon D7100, roughly 18 month old Nikkor 1.8 35mm lens, brand new SanDisk SD cards. (Brand new = less than two months)

Camera bought from reputable camera shop, I can't see that ants have been in it from the beginning.
I don't change lenses, all weather seals always left in place. I'm hoping to get it back at the end of the week, time will tell how good the repair/clean has been.

The camera is not marketed as a waterproof camera, but I was assured on purchase that it's pretty good on the sealing. Don't be stupid with it, but if it starts raining, don't panic, finish your photo and then look for cover.
Just makes me worry, if ants can get in......

May look into a Pelican case to store it in future.
