I have the chance to test the Nikon, The Sigma and the Tamaron.
All of them are superb, perhaps if you like to take shots of insects the 105 is a bit short and would be hard to get close to them.
The VR is a plus.
Hey guys
Some of you may remember recently my questions about buying through DWI.
Well I ended up deciding I would wait not risk the import tax and save up to buy here in OZ.
The aim was to buy the lense I have wanted for years the Nikon 2.8 ED 24-70mm
I was 200dollars and one pay day away from being able to buy the lense and then my dog got unexpectedly very sick and I had to rush him in for emergency surgery so as you can imagine all my money went towards a couple of grands worth of surgery
So on the bright side my dog pulled through the surgery well so it was money well spent
Recently saw a friend bought the Nikon macro lens and its taken some bloody nice sharp shots, and it got me thinking about getting this lens instead as a stop gap until I can safely save all the pennies again for the zoom I want.
I have always fancied a macro lens for shooting the smaller things in life such as insects etc and I believe it's pretty good for portraits too.
Anyone got this lens? Are you happy with it?
Would it be ok for general shooting when out off roading do you think? I have a 70-200 but there is a time and a place for that lens, I was wondering whether this 105mm would still be good enough length for getting those action shots in water etc.
Thoughts?
Oh and this isn't the first time I have saved for the 24-70 and everything has gone wrong, same happened with the 70-200 every time I hit close to the 2.5g needed my car broke with something expensive lol

Yeah I have read that but from what I can gather its still doable
I guess I would like it for general close up but with the ability to still use it for other general shooting.
I have read the sigma is a unit and can be quite heavy.
To be honest I have a tamron lens and I'm not sure I would buy another hence why looking at the 105mm

SubscriberI've used a Sigma . I'm happy with it. Used it for both portrait & macro. No VR so that would be an advantage. At the time I bought it looked at tests & spec's for both Nikon & Sigma the Sigma came out in front & a lot cheaper. But this may have changed since

The Sigma is available with OS now as far as I know.
For close up images I am using the 70-300 with a Nikon diopter, it does not give me the 1to1 ratio of a macro lens but it is very versatile.
I am considering in borrow my son's Nikon 300 f/4 and get a PN-11 extension tube , it is a very nice package.
HERE is one sample in the internet with that combo and HERE is another one
I've got a Sigma 105mm f2.8 macro on my Nikon 800E - it's got OS (two stages) - AF or Manual - and it works a treat... cost me around 1K from "Ted's"... yep it's a bit heavy but I use it mainly on a tripod so no problem really...

Hi,
I've had two Nikon macro 105 lenses and used both professionally for over 30 years.
Now that was a few years ago on film cameras. The only difference was the f stop function, one would auto open as you focused in and was rated at f4.
The other did not, and was rated at f2.8.
Both were fabulous lenses, and the one I would have on the camera for any call-out at work.
I would love to get back to a Nikon digital SLR, and the 105 Macro would be the first lens I would get.
cheers
I have been looking at heaps of images and there doesn't really appear to be a lot between the lenses...
and another one that seems to be up there with them although an older lens is the Tokina 100mm
I have to say though I'm still swaying to the Nikon...I don't like the finish on the sigma lenses and I'm not sure about getting a tamron after having my 2.8 zoom lens

Go for it and have a lot of fun
Macro and close up photography it is a lot of fun and you can do it when time on hand, the weather conditions or nature light it is not good for other type of photography.
My collection of mating wasps was done in our back yard and the majority of the insects as well.
