Thread: Nikon 105mm VR Macro lens

I have the chance to test the Nikon, The Sigma and the Tamaron.
All of them are superb, perhaps if you like to take shots of insects the 105 is a bit short and would be hard to get close to them.
The VR is a plus.

Yeah I have read that but from what I can gather its still doable

I guess I would like it for general close up but with the ability to still use it for other general shooting.

I have read the sigma is a unit and can be quite heavy.

To be honest I have a tamron lens and I'm not sure I would buy another hence why looking at the 105mm

I've used a Sigma . I'm happy with it. Used it for both portrait & macro. No VR so that would be an advantage. At the time I bought it looked at tests & spec's for both Nikon & Sigma the Sigma came out in front & a lot cheaper. But this may have changed since

The Sigma is available with OS now as far as I know.
For close up images I am using the 70-300 with a Nikon diopter, it does not give me the 1to1 ratio of a macro lens but it is very versatile.
I am considering in borrow my son's Nikon 300 f/4 and get a PN-11 extension tube , it is a very nice package.

I've got a Sigma 105mm f2.8 macro on my Nikon 800E - it's got OS (two stages) - AF or Manual - and it works a treat... cost me around 1K from "Ted's"... yep it's a bit heavy but I use it mainly on a tripod so no problem really...

I've had two Nikon macro 105 lenses and used both professionally for over 30 years.
Now that was a few years ago on film cameras. The only difference was the f stop function, one would auto open as you focused in and was rated at f4.
The other did not, and was rated at f2.8.
Both were fabulous lenses, and the one I would have on the camera for any call-out at work.

I would love to get back to a Nikon digital SLR, and the 105 Macro would be the first lens I would get.

In THIS image it can be appreciate how good it is the Tamaron lens.

I have been looking at heaps of images and there doesn't really appear to be a lot between the lenses...

and another one that seems to be up there with them although an older lens is the Tokina 100mm

I have to say though I'm still swaying to the Nikon...I don't like the finish on the sigma lenses and I'm not sure about getting a tamron after having my 2.8 zoom lens
