How do you back up your LR5 files

Heu guys im curious to know how you back up your LR and PS files

I have just tried to open a LR5 catalogue on my laptop because of the problems i had with the other computer only to find I cant see the images

After a bit of digging i found that backing up a catalogue does not in fact back up your images only the changes made to those images...

Rookie error I guess but also a little vit misleading i think as i expect a Back up to be a back up.

I have managed to turn my old computer on now and I'm currently backing up my complete pictures folder which is 60gig

In the hope I can get this catalogue working as I have some exhibition images i need to gain access to....so finger crossed??!!!!!

So what do you guys do?

Should i be backing up the catalogue and each time i do send the raw files to back up as well?

The problem i find is the way lightroom saves is in a new folder each month so im worried Im going to have bloody folders everywhere.

I don't understand why back ups cant be straight forward and simple its any wonder a lot of people make the mistake of not having backups.

I wish i could just have 1 folder for catalogues and 1 folder for raw files.

do you import directly into lightroom?

i use viewnx2 to import my pics and put them where i want them..

it automatically incrments folders etc etc

then i import them into lightroom

i can access the pics with other software when i need

and i back up using a free util called karens replicator...

How do you back up your LR5 files

Yes I import directly in to Lightroom I also export to photobucket and flickr directly from there as well as Jpeg for images that need to be printed for show.

I loaded viewnx when I first got my D7100 and i didnt like it

But probably because I was already used to LR.

But it sounds like its doing for you what LR does for me anyway.

As it automatically puts the NEF files in a file when it imports its just that it does a new file for every import rather than putting them all in the one file.

I have 2 Synology NAS that backup from one to other. All I keep on my MacBook Pro is work in progress. I don't import to LR, I use folders instead. That way I'm in more control and can move between apps Capture1, LR, On1, Aperture, PS. The only exception to this is when I use CC to bring things to LR on the iPad Pro

The catalogue is only thumbnails , ie on mine the images will be in ( for example ) images or my pictures . The catalogue only holds the info of alterations to apply to the original, there's a video on Adobe that shows how to relocate images to catalogue ...never had to do it though, I work on a copy of the raw then that gets saved back to the images file as a dng or tiff ,mainly so I don't loose stuff......there's a good Lightroom forum , not Shure of its name( I'm not on my comp) they should be able to help you out

What do you mean you dont import to lightroom?

Whats the difference in saving your raw file on your computer and the importing the image in to work on it
Than importing all in to lightroom which all raws get saved in a file you can access

    I dont really understand.

But I want to understand because if i can do it a better way i will

I have gotten all my images back now i copied all the images over the the laptop the loaded my latest cataloge and the directed the files to the right location sorted.

But would like a nearer way to save and import files etc if someone like derek can explain.

Im about to update to CC so if i can start by organising better/correctly i would like to try.
