Here are 2 photos i took the other night. I am still getting used to the new DSLR but it is amazing what changing the focus can do to a picture.

Try playing with the depth of field and speed. You should be able to have both of the thingmibobs in focus.
Have alook at the coat of the burro. Nikon D80 18 - 200mm lens.
Taken at 35mm 80th sec F 4.2. These figures also depend on the type of lens used.
Depth of field is also very dependent on the focus distance, as you close in the DoF narrows markedly as well.

What you mean is the Hyperfocal Distance when taking the shot.
