To be bias Vern, I would say buy a DSLR with the capability to change lenses etc.

Nikon and Canon both offer excellent entry level cameras, however, it all boils down to your initial budget and whether you think you will pursue photography further as a passion.

I would strongly suggest that you pop into your local camera store and have a chat with the staff for starters about your needs now and what they might be in the future.

If you don't mind buying second hand there are some absolute bargains available on Gumtree/eBay for example.

    Hope this helps mate

I can't comment on Canon as I'm a Nikon junkie I'm afraid ...... Best to talk to the camera shop Damien, you will certainly get a camera/lens combo that is capable of outstanding images under $1000.

I bought a Pentax DSLR last year thinking I could use my old lenses with it. Turned out OK but it's a heavy kind of lump. Bought a 55 to 300 digital lens for it and it's better but still a bit of a lump. I then started to look on ebay for a better point-and shoot for lugging around on the treadly and discovered the Canon PowerShot compact range. I settled for a second hand 10MP 10x optical zoom number and I'm quite impressed with it. Some of the newer ones have nearly double the pixels and loads more zoom and rate at quite good picture quality. Like this one:

Canon PowerShot SX700 HS 16.1 MP Digital Camera - Black 30X Zoom 4549292006841 | eBay

Whatever camera you're looking at, just google the model number and read a few reviews before committing your pennies. Example for above:

Canon PowerShot SX700 HS review - CNET
