    pentax.. i noticed a few own them

    Hi guys.. i dont like running with the masses with any purchase.. hence the reason i currently have a kyocera m410r camera. its not great but its pretty quick and makes some nice shots.

    anyway.. been planning to upgrade to an slr for a while and have been watching the Pentax models, ,lots of glass available cheaply from older pentax's and the fact that they are weather resistant and have a dust removal system kind of appeals. downside is the speed as i have heard the k200 and k20d are a bit slow although the k20d is rated at 3fps (kyocera is 3.3)

    for those that have them.. what do you reckon? any little quirks? general impressions etc etc.

    Thanks

    Steve

    Before I start, I'm not a serious photographer, and mainly wanted a DSLR for the focus speed and low light performance
    I went through the same exercise a few months back, and almost bought a K10 for the same reasons you describe.
    In the end I didn't, and ended up settling on an Olympus E-510 with twin lens kit - purchased online with 5 year warranty from Dinosaurdeals.com.au for around $900.
    The kit lenses are pretty good, 3.5fps, image stabilisation in body, small and light, good battery life and decent price. So far I'm pretty happy with it. The image stabilization has been great for low light shots.
    The main reason I decided not to go with the K10/K20 was the size/weight. Would have loved all the weather proofing, but the kit lenses don't have the same level of sealing so it defeats the purpose a bit IMHO.

    5teve;

    Here is the review for the pentax K20D;

    Pentax K20D Review: 1. Introduction: Digital Photography Review

    Yes it is slow Frame/sec ,but do you do a lot of sports photography ? in RAW? where you need to keep your finger on the shutter to take continuous frames ?

    according to specs ,

    • Continuous Hi: 3 fps, up to 38 Best JPEG frames, 14 images RAW,

    • Burst mode: 21 fps 1.6MB JPEG, 115 frames*

    but what i also liked about is it's Live view .

    Live view with magnify option*
    • Depth-of-field Optical (lens stopped down)
    • Digital (shot taken without saving, previewed on LCD)

    I've been thinking about the K20D myself but a new pentax is being released the Pentax K-M , has 3.5fps , slightly quicker that K20D

    • 3.5fps for 5 frames JPEG or 4 RAW

    i have read i think every review.. but i just wanted user opinion.. i have read about the new pentax entry level or the k2000 as it may be known. looks like there may be improvements that will follow through to the k30d etc.. i may just wait and see what turns up..

    still be good to hear from a user tho!

    Thanks

    I use a Pentax K10D and have found it fine for my use, certainly the fps rate isn't an issue for the type of photography I do, focusing in low light can be an issue.

    Have a look at

    for some recent pics with the camera.

    Do you want new or second-hand? I recently bought a second-hand Pentax *ist D - very cheap.

    you almost don't need to buy second-hand these days - I just bought a K200D with Pentax lens for $650...although some of these prices may actually start going up with the Oz$!

    A great camera that allows you to obtain a good range of aftermarket lenses (unlike Olympus and Sony)
    Always looking for creative new ways to get bogged... :whistling:

    76 RR...sold coz fuel was expensive at 70c/l :eek:
    93 200 Tdi Disco...old faithful...sold to make way for...
    99 Td5 Disco ACE...nice drive...hopefully reliable...

    3fps is fast enough .its a camera not a bren gun! lol
    consider what ur going to be photographing . kids ,landscapes ,landrovers {lol}..
    at the moment pentax has the sharpest prime af lenses going{limiteds} i use them more often than zooms. they make the camera much smaller.{there aluminium to just like l rovers!!}
    they use sd cards witch are every where
    they have in camera image stablisation{youre not buying it on every lens}
    rear compatability with all pentax lens's{back to the 1960's if u want}
    sealed bodies
    down side...the af is slower than others ,this isnt an issue to me ,its somthing you get used to fast.

    pop into a shop and compare the feel/build of the lenses compared to canikon
    they are better in general

    ill post a few high res pics from the primes if ur interested

    Thanks Guys

    3fps i can live with.. i do a heavy mix of pictures.. and surprised myself just how many times i have used the 3.3fps for extended periods.. ie 100 shots.. even 1000 shots..

    the low light focus worries me as that is what i really need but i guess i can flick onto manual and go from there!

    the image stabilisation and sealing is one of the reasons i would go for the pentax, plus the high availability of second hand lenses around

    the AF i can deal with as the kyocera isnt hot on that (although quick for its age) and being an slr it will be fast... just not as fast.. i tend to prefocus a lot of shots anyway.. then im only dealing with shutter lag...

    and SD cards... yep i have em lying everywhere

    i may still hold off and see what the k30d may bring tho...

    thanks

    Steve
