    ~ $2100

it is a good lens. I think the extra stop was worth it, possible to get some bokeh even at 16mm if you use f/2.8, noticeably more so than at f/4.

The 17-40 is just as good quality but can't quite do the DoF trick as well, but you get 5mm extra reach, and it's half the price.

    Horses, courses.

I'm quite new to DSLR but I still don't quite understand lens pricing. Why is your 16-35L twice the price of my smc PENTAX-DA* 16-50mm F2.8 ED AL [IF] SDM?

Canon lenses with an L prefix are luxury lenses and have superior optics, even makes the nikon guys shed a tear.

So similar to Pentax DA* lenses? Sure 10% or even 30% but over 100% more expensive???

It's not just the optics. It's also build quality, including weatherproofing, plus they come with carry cases and hoods.

If you even pick up a Canon L lens and a non-L equivalent you'll immediately see, and feel the difference. L lenses typically carry their max aperture across the entire focal length too. They also have USM focusing. L lenses can be identified by a thin red ring.
