    water proof V weather proof

    Ever since I lent my film Nikon to my daughter I have been toying with the idea of a DSLR. I am a bit if a Nikon fan - somewhat like I am a landrover fanatic, so I have been looking at them with much interest. Then I had a bit of an anurism regarding cameras

    I love the outdoors and wildlife photography, which when included with the 4X4 poses a problem, if I am going to spend upwards of 3k plus on a camera that I am going to be up to my armpits in mud, dirt and rain how long will it last?

    So I m looking at getting a water proof camera first then I will invest in a DSLR down the track.

    The Camera that has caught my eye is the Canon powershot D10, has anyone had any experience with this camera, or any of the other waterproof ones?

    another option would be to get a decent DSLR and a waterproof housing for it. I think these are available for some brands. try asking a big camera shop for advice they are usually quite helpful with this. I;d recommend Photo Continental in Brisbane - worth a phone call or email I'd suggest.

    Have a look at the Pentax K7 DSLR (weather-resistant) you can get weather-resistant lens too. Noy sure If that what you are after tho

    Hey Vlad, I haven't looked them up but I think they are the big perspex case that the camera goes in aren't they? I will look them up.

    Actually it was while checking this one out that made me start to wonder if I should go water proof first

    The Canon G10 is a very good camera but make sure that the software it is up to date. There were a lot of problems with it.
    Regarding water proof camera I do not believe that it is one there that you can use in that conditions, you'll either need an underwater digital camera, as specified by the manufacturer, or you'll need to purchase an underwater housing for your digital camera.

    If you look for a dust and bad weather body, then the Nikon D300 is the way to go.
    I have the D200 which have sealed body as well and do not have problems regarding dust, or moist.

    Remember the problem is on your procedure to change lens, then dust can get in if you are not careful.

    However if you want to save money then the K-7 is the way to go. $1750 for a weather sealed body and weather sealed lens. Plus you can record movies and plug in an external mic.

    I have been eyeing off the D300 top camera but it gets back to my worry about a tropical deluge being similar to being underwater.

    The cannon G10 might be the was to go as a rough and tumble camera and later (finances) a nikon D300, as I have several lenses for a nikon already

    First question - Are you actually planning to take photos underwater?

    If the answer is no, then I wouldn't hesitate recommending the DSLR option with a decent protection case for storage / carting around. You'll find that with a bit of planning, there's no problem using it in mud / dirt / sand conditions for over 95% of all shots you'd probably end up taking with a waterproof camera.

    I've had a Canon 20D for a few years that I've taken camping / 4WDing / trekking / backpacking etc trips without any dramas. It's been dropped, covered in dust, splashed with mud (& water) and it still performs like on Day 1. They're quite sturdy - I know of a few that are used professionally & have copped a fair bit of abuse in their working lives, still going strong.

    Anyhow I wouldn't discount a DSLR just because you're planning to "actively" use it - just my $0.02 worth.
