These are two images of a dead bristolcone pine tree in The White Mountains east of Bishop CA. I took the images this summer on a short 4 wheeling vacation. There are two groves of living ancient trees up on the mountain.... they are at about 11,000 feet in elevation. (the highest peak about 8 miles, away is 14,200' )- The living trees are the oldest living entities on earth - one of the living trees date back 4,000 years. This dead tree and other like it don't rot away very fast - first the wood is extreamly dense, but more importantly the air is so thin and dry the dead wood does not rot. They get snow up on the mountain but when it melts, it immediately evaoprates. It is a very harse enviroment and tough to stay hydrated when doing any physical activity. When I was younger I mountainbiked from this location to the peak.... it was a very tough ride. Some of these ghost trees have been determined to be 5 to 8 thousand years old.... depending on the light they always make a good piture!
