    Gunbarrel 1978

Have been converting my slides to digital .The following are an extracts from the first batch I did.
In July, August and September 1978 a group of 5, [4 landies and a Holden Overlander] Took a trip to Alice Springs, Arnham Land, Gibb River road and home to Perth down the West Coast, Via the Gunbarrel Highway. Unbeknown to us at the time, the desert had received a vast quantity of rain. IE, Glen Ayle Stn normally receives between 3 to 5 inches of rain. In '78 they had around 15 inches.
In one area it took us 6 hours to travel 10 miles! We had my PTO and another one going nearly non stop. There was no way around, you just had to plod on. The surrounding area was worse than the track.
The only slide that has been adjusted is the "Looking Back"

Looking Back & The Approaching Storm [This one has been enlarged and is hanging on my wall in
the lounge] In the slides younger days the suns rays were quite prominent.

    Thanks for posting that!

I visited Ayers Rock (as it was then) in July/August 1978. I remember the track up to Oodnadatta being really boggy with some very deep holes

Geez Derek I was there in July/August 1978 too. I was the annoying kid in the school bus. Yes I recall rain - north of Maree and also at the rock.

Yes, they haven't turned out to bad at all concidering their age.
    Taken with a Canon AE1.

Just finished another 170 or so, nothing else to do cosidering it was 40+ the last three days. Dont know how we got away with no air conditioning in the old days. Maybe it was because we were young. The old SWB just had a pair of sprung loaded flaps in the roof.

Sorry D-Dender didn't read the post properly.

It was made of fiber glass and opened like an oyster shell from the rear.
    Great camper unit.
We picked up the gent and his lady up in Wiluna. They were heading the same way. They were members of the Vic. L.R. club. Been trying to remember their names.
