Esky and Ice for 2 week cape trip????

    Hi all,
My up coming cape trip with our local 4wd club is getting ever closer and I am quite quickly running out of both time and money to do all I wanted to get done to the disco before the trip. It is time to start doing the essintal things only.

I had planned to get a dual battery wired in and borrow my mates 12volt fridge but that may no longer be an option.
For those of you that have done it, Is a 2 week cape trip easy with an esky and Ice? If so do you have any techniques as to how to pack and what Ice to use.

Is Dry Ice an option? I know it produces CO2 gas and Is not something you want in the car etc etc. I assume block ice over chunk. I was also going to have 2 eskys 1 smaller one for drinks (opened a lot) and a larger esky for food with some good Ice blocks?

I need some advice as the longest trip I have done with an esky and ice was 4 days and that completly melted 2 large blocks and 2 bags using the 2 esky option.

    Thanks Andrew

I think 2 weeks is a big call in an area that doesn't get cold overnight. My best is 2 weeks in a Simpson Desert winter (nice during the day, but around 0 degrees overnight) and 1 week in a Fraser Island christmas (always hot). I don't ever remember being cold at the Cape during winter.

I used an EvaKool esky which has benchmark insulation. The whole bottom I layered in Frozen plastic 2 litre milk bottles and packed them tightly. I then layered everything over them and froze it all before it went in. I think thats about your only chance. It'll also be important to keep the esky full as voids will cause it to warm up quicker. Opening and closing will also blow your chances.

You may be able to top up with ice at Bamaga or something, but it wouldn't last long and will flood the esky. I guess you'll really need to just see what happens, but don't let that stop you from having a good time. Perhaps look to vac meats etc to get through as best as possible with minimal refrigeration.
    Cheers

suck it up and get that battery and car fridge. Nothing worse than spoilt food. With a good fridge you can have icecream in a desert.

Two weeks on an esky and ice is not going to work. End of story.

Hire an Engel with the battery pack - plugs into your cigarette lighter and re-charges during the day's driving and then provides the power during the night. Easy. No fuss, good meat and cold beer.

Hi, borrow the fridge and remember to turn it off when you stop driving. Make sure your battery is in good nick - get it tested if you are not sure. Keep the fridge on freeze or pretty low and check it from time to time, still better than an esky. Keep your meat in tupperwear and only have a few day's worth.

North of Lakelands there are fresh supplies at Weipa and Bamaga and a shop of sorts at Laura, Musgrave, Coen and Lockhart with take aways at Archer and Morton. I think Branwell Station may also do food.

Keep a few days supplies and buy as you go - may cost a bit more but not that much overall.

Don't stress too much, just have a good holiday.

Thanks for the replys figured that would be the case. Yeah I went to the local battery place not the big name battery store and they were considerably cheaper,

Where is usually the cheapest place to buy good quality thick wire to wire the dual battery in?

    Talking

if you can get a Chescold fridge freezer 3 way

    you wont need extra battery

run it as freezer for a few days before you leave on trip to get it all frozen cold put your meat chicken frozen veggie packet food in as frozen for the trip

run it on battery option during the day via you cigarette lighter unless you have wired it into your main battery

when you stop during day disconnect or it will flatten your battery like leaving your headlights will do

night time and prolonged day stays run it on gas option

rake frozen food for that day out the night before and put into your esky will act as ice for thinks like drinks and fruit and veggies and bread etc
