    Stretchers/camp beds

Have finally taken the plunge and let the moths out of my wallet and have ordered an oz tent rv4 after wanting one for a few years now. As the prices are fairly much the same i was quite keen to help the smaller shops out rather than join the masses at the likes of BCF so have ordered one at a small shop. Now i was going to also buy a couple of strechers but they only had a few flimsey ones on display so went down to ranger for a look but also the ones they had where fairly flimsey apart from the colman big foot just did not like the way it folded up. Anyone have any recomendations on a good quality stretcher?

I bought a Wild Country stretcher bed from Rays 3 years ago. It's canvas, double-stitching,and has steel legs. It's really solid, setup and pack-away time is very quick, and is quite comfy (even better with a Thermorest on top).

It's got a massive amount of use over the years and has stood up brilliantly to the task...still like new. I paid $10 as it was in the clearance section, but for the life of me have never found a fault with it...go figure! I think they're selling for $80-90 normally, and can definitely recommend them. Like you discovered, there are plenty of flimsy ones on the market, but these ones are solid!

I have asked this question at every camping store and never got a satisfactory answer.

"with a stretcher, how to stop the pillow falling off the end when you are asleep without a bed (stretcher) board"

velcro tabs on your pillow case and a velcro strap on the stretcher.

go a sway on the floor or self inflating mattress, never liked stretchers as you have to be careful rolling from side to side

A Thermorest fixes this issue easily, as would a decent season-rated sleeping bag.

I'm a bit of a pussy so will be using a self inflating 4x4 matress on top. Having lived in my last tent for 8 weeks straight The extra storage under the bed is a big selling point as is being off the ground.

Randy, the self inflating jobs are great, but take far longer to setup/packup n chew D-cells like there's no tomorrow...tried my old housemates one, but got a better nights sleep on the stretcher. I guess it depends if you've got company to "entertain" though.

*Edit* If you're talking about something like a Thermorest ontop, the defo do it! Best night's sleep ever, and no temperature issues.

Im with El Duderino on this one i got 2 of the Colemans stretchers from Ray`s as well.
I paid full price, seemed pricey for something made in China at the time but i have used them many times now.
They came with a good generous 50mm matress on them.
We have slept on them at 0c and them are quite warm.
Tip dont use them on an incline as you will slide down the bed when in a nylon sleeping bag, you need level ground.
Fix the pillow with an oky strap if you cant hold onto it.

    Happy camping
