whats wrong with a tarp, 4 ropes some poles and pegs with some of those cheap mozzie domes to put the beds into for a bug free night?

garrycol,
I recently got lucky and picked up an RV2 for about $400 including floor saver and a side panel (bargain)!!
I was initially a bit skeptical about the size, I had been looking at the RV4 as I have 2 kids, but having camped with it recently it is an excellent bit of kit.
Would fit three comfortably, if it was just me with the kids and with a separate tunnel tent for the kids, the wife and I have a virtual palace.
Fast to set up and dead simple. Throw it on the roof and you will not even know it is there, plenty of head room and front awning gives plenty of space if weather turns.
Obviously does not meet you price range (as per the first post) but it is that good that you might find you use it more often than planned.
There are also heaps of cheaper 3 /4 person dome tents on the market, walk into any Rays/BCF etc and the hardest thing is to choose which one but they are generally cheap and with use will fail.
I have a big 6 person tent I picked up for about $400 as well but you need to be staying for 3 days to justify the set up time !!.
Happy deliberations. My recommendation, spend a bit more and you never have to worry about it again.

Gray all.
I am on the lookout for a tent with similar criteria to Garry. I have a big Southern Cross touring tent which is good for the family when staying put for 3+ days. However I want something for short trips away which is real compact, real quick to put up & down, will keep out showers and bugs. So this not really a tent for touring (ie put up pull down day after day). Also I will use with a vehicle/awning if weather turns nasty. Min size is 2x3 meters. I am prepared to accept not being able to stand up in it.
I am looking for advice from anyone whose had experience with these tents. The EPE tents look good to me.

sometimes two smaller quick-erect tents are better than one big palace... depending on the age of the children, it's amazing how quickly tackers can learn to erect their own shelter when taught how... and look after themselves. cheers

Well after a lot of Internet research and deliberation I bought a Quechua 2 second + four man tent. It arrived today and tried setting it up in the lounge room. It literally pops up in a couple of seconds (would be ready to use after putting in 4 pegs) and takes about 1 min to pack up and into a bag again.
I will post pics on weekend.
