Don't be so tight, by yourself one of those cheap and nasty eBay specials.
G'day,
I was pondering this the other day - why not mount small dome tent on a sheet of ply, chuck in a mattress and mount the whole lot on a couple of roof bars for a cheap cartop camper?
Obviously there are a few other bits to think about, like a waterproof cover for when driving, and you'd want a tent with a floor-less vestibule for access, maybe the cover can double as an awning....
Anyone done anything like this? Or are there any glaring faults I've missed?
A normal rooftop tent is out of my budget, but I really really like the concept.
Cheers,
Alex

I hear those "Aussie Traveler" tents are the business![]()
Do a search... There is somewhere a picture of a pop up external hooped dome tent glued down within a shallow open out wooden box mounted to a roof.... James
Jerry could make you one, and after the post about getting robbed at bunnings I am sure he would happy to get his tools out.
just buy a cheap swag and roll it out on the roof.![]()

Pity these are no longer advertised, at $350 plus around $70 courier to Sydney they were great value:

This looks almost identical to the modern day tent cots from kamp-rite? They're still available:

Similar concept, yeah- I looked at them before buying the above RTT. Mine is designed first and foremost for being on a roof top and for on the ground is secondary. Also doesn't need any poles added like the one in the Kulkyne video does. If the double is similar in size to my RTT, they are waaay too bulky to carry anywhere but on the roof.
