    Is this a swag alternative?

Im looking to buy a tent / swag for just me for when Im away for a weekend with mates in their 4x4.

Ive discounted the Oztent because it wont go on cars without a roofrack / bars. Jet-tent / BW Turbo are too expensive for just me.

I sort of got myself to thinking of a decent swag, then came across Tarptent.com.

    Tarptent Ultralight Shelters

Any thoughts on how they might perform in the bush?

My first concern would be breathability and ruggedness / tear resistance.

That looks like a lot of work to me. I'd just use a swag and/or a regular dome style tent.
    Cheers

Looks like an option if space is your problem. However, what do you lay on? Taking mats, self inflating or blow ups starts to eat into the space you are saving. I do like the idea of it but would question the strength of withstanding the elements...
Never checked the cost...how expensive is it?

Good space to put outdoor gear and protect from rain etc....interesting

    $315....!! Although that is US$

That tarp shelter kinda looks like one of these, but with fewer poles:
Vango TBS® Spectre 200 2 Person Hiking Tent

I've got one of these and they're great, take up bugger-all room in the disco, even with a self inflating mattress.

Not the fastest thing to put up though, certainly takes longer than my mates who simply roll out the swags and I have to admit to often feeling lazy and am seriously contemplating getting one of those 2 sec pop-up tents

Looks pretty chunky Jon...and slow to erect, although roomy.

If you're in a car, you don't need a lot of room in your tent, is my theory, so the swag or a bivi is perfect...I have an awesome swag which I love throwing in the back of Monty but for the odd hiking or paddling trip I decided it'd be worthwhile getting something I can carry, so I got one of these from Mountain Hardwear:
    Mountain Hardwear | Sprite™ 1

It's so easy to put up, takes little room in the bag and is light...and has a wee vestibule for your bag/ boots etc. $200 and dry as a bone.

I went with Mountain Hardwear as I have a tent from them that's lasted more then ten years and countless trips in the UK and here, and is still in tip-top shape....so they get my loyalty out of quality, but I think there are plenty of units like htis on the market. Lightweight doesn't have to mean "fragile" anymore, unless you're planning to sleep in a bed of roses with some heavy-drinking and violent echidnae.

As Chilly mentoned though, you need to consider what you lay on. I got a decent inflatable sleeping mat that rolls down incredibly small and keeps me warm and comfy. In Australian conditions I've found this to be excellent...and it's always nice when you can rock up with only one bag to throw into the back of your mates car!

    Happy shopping!

I dont like it. Swag or a tent. I have spent many a night in a swag, i prefer slightly larger ones so i dont feel like like your in a body bag.

I like the ones where the front stays up with a rod, but yeh swags are great. There quick undo two straps roll out... jump in.... jump out, roll up and put in the car, when your with mates you dont want to be doing anything to complicated.

Hi Jon, I dont have photo, but I have a swag and also a great option 2. It is like a banana lounge with a tent on top.

It has the 2 hoop legs so you are up off the ground and you zip yourself in. Folds to about 750 x 750 x 100 or less. They are great, you just fold them open or closed.

Just found this one to show you, not the same as mine but you get the idea

We needed a smaller 2nd tent for Jr Fluids, so I ended up with one of these ...
Amazon Outdoors - Malamoo ... the 3sec version. There's a larger XTRA sized one, but the XTRA bit seems to be just a small front vestibule.

3 secs & its up. I lay down a 2.5-3m peice of shadecloth first, then place the tent with the excess shadecloth to the front (keeps dirt & crap out of the tent).

It's lightweight, stood up to a force 10 gale & bucketting rain over easter (without the guy ropes being setup ... just 4x pegs !!) AND stayed dry inside. It's perfect for me for an overnight or two, and perfect for Mr 12yrs, as he can put it up/down.

Think I paid about $110 for mine. Well built, and does what it's supposed to.

I have the same problem, something quick and easy for overnight stops, I am going to get one of the throw down tents, single size, just throw it on the ground and it pops into shape, then folds up like the dunny/ensuite tent thingies, around $75 for a good one, Regards Frank.

P.S. Seen a BCF ad for one of these pop up tents last night on TV, no price but 30% off, Regards Frank.
