I had a good look at the ARB Skydome single today .... Looks to be a nice peice of gear. Canvas is very heavy weight. Mattress is good with a cover that's heavier than just a cotton sheet style cover. Plenty of room inside with a few places to stash bits and hang pieces, and it has a nifty pocket to hang yer 'kubra hat out of harms way (accessible from inside or outside).

Has a bucket floor with high sides, and is free standing (using two long spreader poles inserted between the three hoops). The top unzips only a bit more than half way across. Has mesh both ends with a flap for some weather protection. It's free standing due to the poles arrangement.

The ends of the hoops & spreader poles have a little pin in them, smaller diameter than the pole, which locate into brass eyelets in the six tent peg tabs attached to the bucket floor .... Looks like a simple method of getting it together, but many moons ago we had a nylon dome tent that used poles with little pins on the ends like this, and the pins eventually break off the end of the pole, and then you can't make the end of the pole stay where it's supposed to ..... I don't like the look of the pins. They are very small and I just know they will eventually break, making the Skydome impossible to erect .... Also uses the same pins in the ends of the spreader bars. Hmmmmm ......

Apart from the silly pins, it looks good. Would I pay $395 for one ? Don't know (haven't look at enough of the competition in the flesh to have a well informed opinion) ... But it looks good quality and quiet substantial. Rolled up would be around 900 long and about 300-350 in diameter ... Setup about 2.1 x 0.9 x .85 high (plenty of headroom)

    It's a spacious mini-tent !

I asked the sales person how long it took to put up (it was only put up this morning) .... About 3 minutes he said ... I reckon 3 - 5 minutes without booze on board ... My oztent goes up quicker for a basic overnighter.

X2 that the canvas layers of a basic swag add warmth. I have never used more than 2 blankets in my 30 years of swagging

I also have to agree that using a sleeping bag in a swag kind of defeats the purpose. I much prefer having a close to normal bed with sheets etc.

As for insects I just throw a flap over my face. usually when the sun comes up as well.

    Cheers

My canvas swag only had a 2" old foam mattress, a woollen (genuine prison issue grey) blanket for under and a $20- woolworths doona on top.

The new one has a high density foam mattress with a silver foil insulation layer adhered to it on the underside, I have added a thermarest over that. From there just adding same blanket under and doona over. But will be bringing the bag for the first use just in case.

I'd just like to say thanks to Baz for starting this thread 'cause you just cost me $380

One Saul single and woolen blanket on its way.

Had a nice ol' chat with Hal on the phone today. Nice chap. Says he doesn't go camping anymore as he's too old ... Been sowing swags since '57. 55yrs and still going strong.

This will be a first for me.
