I don't bother with sand pegs either - I just use a couple of old pillow cases, half fill them with sand and bury them with the guy rope wrapped around it. Simple and I find quite secure even in hot soft sand. Once buried 3-4 inches below the surface, they aren't going anywhere.
Had it happen once at Moreton, and to my sons awning at Straddie.
Luckily the ARB awning has flexible knuckles.
Forget sandpegs, or sandbags - but the screw in pegs, blue ones from BCF or black ones from Rhino style.
I've had these up in gales and the awning went nowhere.
Rhino Rack - Rhino-Rack Sand Screw - 31113
My brother had had his rhino shade do it twice, first time no ropes and a gust of wind, second time pulled his sand pegs out. I have had no problems with bags(whatever was handy at the time)
