    Coleman fuel consumption

Looking for some info on fuel consumption for Coleman Dual fuel stoves.

I've had mine for a few years and love it, but only use it occasionally as we prefer to cook on the fire whenever possible. I've realised I don't have much idea of how much fuel to take with me on a longer trip when we'll be mainly using the cooker.
Its only the two of us, and the usage is mainly boiling water for hot drinks, cooking the evening meal, and washing up.
Its a 2 burner stove, but we generally just use the main burner.

Anyone got a rule of thumb or recent experience of how much fuel they consume?

I can only give you an indication I take mine away for 4 days and use it for all meals and random kettle boiling for cuppas, washing up ect also combined with my dual fuel lamp which burns for up to 4 hours a night on low around the tent area both of these use about 3.5tl of white spirit in total, cant give you just a stove usage as I always have both on, also I dont use petrol in mine so cant help there

    Hope this helps

    Fuel useage

    S

I used mine to cook all meals including baking/ roasting in a collapsible oven on stovetop and never used more than a litre per day. I used about half this when just heating water and meals.

I used unleaded mainly on a 13 month trip of daily use and used Coleman fuel when baking and roasting to clean the generator.

I had the stove for 15 years and only had problems with unleaded when it was used intermittently and I guess the residue caked on/ hardened.

My lamp uses a tank full over 2 nights.

They're a good thing but all develop a personality re lighting.

I had the same issues / worries....

Bought 2 of the 10l steel jerry cans as easier to stow n refill the burner tank. Found it Varied a lot depending on wind conditions etc... Eventually only used shellite as it ran better / less mess / maintainence...Probably around the 700-800ml per day for the twin burner running x3 meals n varying hot water requirements... Never more than a litre....Always figured if i was caught short i would siphon from the vehicle fuel system...

    Diesel in Coleman stoves ??

Anybody tried it, does it work.

I hate the stink of Petrol & not so keen on Shellite / white spirit.
(but I could bathe in Diesel.)

So I use cheap $20 butane stoves & disposable bottles. buy in bulk for $5 a pack of 4 , thats cheap cooking, Fine they are not the greatest in cold weather but its a snap to warm a bottle up.

so Brad et el ?? whats the go with Diesel

    I saw these on ebay

    Diesel burner

    That's interesting.

I had a bushwalking multi fuel stove (MSR) that could take Dieso, you had to change jets from petrol jet. Good on ULP and poor on Dieso, difficult to preheat. Jets blocked each use. You really needed to per heat it with ULP or Meths.

The one you found is an exact copy of the Coleman ULP including the look of the transfer providing instructions. The burner is different and similar to MSR. At that price you should give it a go and report back.
You could pre heat the fuel heating tube with a butane stove lighter.

I have a Coleman like this and it is great but loses a lot of heat. I am thinking of making a box/ surround for it. It was good on the bike as you could fill it from a feline and return any unused fuel to the tank. It may get use in the S1.

The disposables are so convenient as you say but I wish you could buy a quality one in a good case. The cases have disintegrated and screws vibrate out and they fall apart.

Thanks everyone. Looks like I need to throw in a couple of extra litres of shellite before we leave. My better half likes her morning toast, so I've stayed away from running ULP as I reckon it could make the toast taste a bit average.

I used the old pump up primus kerosene blow torches quite a bit as a teenager for various heating tasks. Absolute ripper once they were running, and you'd get the last couple of inches of the nozzle glowing bright red.
Had to be pre-heated with metho and were a PITA to get going though.

Would be interesting to hear how those multi-fuel cookers perform. In my head ULP/Shellite and kero/diesel are completely different fuels, and would seem to need different burners/jets/preheaters etc to be able to run efficiently.

We just came back from a 3wk outback trip where we used a 2 burner dual fuel coleman that I've had for about 20yrs now..... Worked fine for a family of 5. Took 3ltrs + full fuel tank, so all up probably about 4ltrs in total. By the 2nd week I was a little bit worried we were going to run out so I called into Alice Springs Bunnings to buy some more Shellite, but in the end we did have enough to cover us until we got home.....

It was used at night to cook dinner & then in the morning to boil the billy....

    hi
with 2 of us 5 litres runs stoves and lamp for over 2 weeks, i do however use the smaller single burner coleman stove for most things{faster ,puts out a lot more heat} .From a tank in the 2 burner id recon wed get 2 days and breakfast on the third. the lamp{coleman ultralight} id say a tank a night {i recon 300mm per tank} ...One point re using unleaded is that they dont like opel fuel, they work but smoke and fart and put out less heat

Just to update the after our trip. We were away for 4 weeks, ate at pubs for maybe 10 nights, and cooked on the fire for another 4 or 5.
Leaves about 15 nights where we used the cooker for dinner, and the whole trip for occasional cooked breakfasts and hot drinks for the 2 of us.
    Total consumption was 5L.

For future trips I think I'll start at 2L/week and adjust a bit depending on how many dinners are likely to be non-stove.
