Thread: Sourcing Replacement Aluminium Poles for Awning

G'day all!

Not technically camping, but I guessed perhaps an appropriate area.

We've had a "Gunyah" awning on the Defender since we bought it. I believe the company no longer exists.

We recently had a couple of the aluminium poles "customised", due to us being lazy and not pegging it down overnight. The wind picked up overnight, and relocated our awning to the roof rack area in a funky new shape.

Does anybody know where to get some replacement poles from? I reckon all the fittings themselves are salvageable, so I just need the poles themselves. They have an inner and an outer, with cam-locks. The outer one is about 22mm O.D., all have about 1mm thick walls, and obviously the inner fits inside the outer.

Has anybody had to purchase anything like this? Is it something you can get from the likes of BCF, Ray's Outdoors, etc.?

I had a 'wind incident' which did bad things to both the spreader poles and the legs of my awning. (The awning ended up over the roof of the truck and the pegs were pulled out and flung a fair distance...) Being aluminium they don't straighten well once creased.


I rang Poles Apart and ordered 4 twist lock tent poles. The short ones are 7'6". The arrived the day after I ordered them and as soon as I opened the box I liked them. They are a fair bit heavier than the originals and the camlock works far better. A couple of (minor) problems that I can live with... The are too long to live permanently in the awning without trimming them down to fit. The are the opposite was around for the awning knuckle. I cut 'collars' from the old bent poles and fixed them on.


All up, for a reasonable price I have replaced the poles with something far stronger than original and Poles Apart stock replacement camlocks and other bits and pieces. Better still the poles are Aussie made in Melbourne, keeping some local metal tradies in a job.


All up positive experience and a quality product.
