Hi all,
First off thanks to all for your good feedback and points. It gave us a lot to think about.
We finally decided to go with the Howling Moon 'Star Gazer' RRT. And so far I think we made the best choice. It was a little more than I would have liked to have spent but, Hopefully its going to be our home from home for about 12 months.
The quality is impressive and it looks like its built to last. I really like the option to pull back the fly cover and open the roof and "Star Gaze". Very pleasant.
However............Does anyone have any tips on how to get it on and off the roof? Yeah, yeah I know. Get a few mates over and over a few beers lift it on or off.
I need a few ideas as I want something that will make it easy to fit/remove so that if we want to go away of a quick over night or weekend on the fly I dont have to think days ahead. I want to just get up and go.
Also I dont want to leave it up there as it a pain to park under cover and I dont want it rotting in the sun.
Any ideas?
Cheers
Nino.
Do you have a shed or similar you can get the truck inside with the RTT on top? I guess not but you can rig up some ropes to lift it into the roof.
My dad years ago had a Hannibal RTT on a defender - I seem to recall he erected a tall four posted structure that you could drive into the middle of, and it had a system of pulleys ropes etc that you could lift the RTT then lower it to the ground. It was a long time ago so I don't have any pictures I'm afraid. I'm not sure if the tent was kept outside undercover or what
I have found a you tube clip of a bloke that has made an 'A' frame structure that looks to be the sort of thing that I'm after. I might have to bite the bullet and get down to Bunnings tomorrow.
I cant get into the garage with the RRT on the roof.
Nino.
I put mine on the bonnet first then the roof rack and slid it back into place. Put an old blanket on the bonnet to protect it. It still takes two people.

NEW FORCELIFT HGS500 - ELECTRIC WINCH/HOIST 250/500KG 20 metres
$99.99.
Lifts my RTT easily using a couple of rachet straps around the tent.
It is still a two person job but swmbo can easily hold it steady while I drive under and line up the car.
I store the RTT on my trailer when not in use, If I need to use the trailer I can lift it off and put it back solo.
Regards
Just deleted my prev message, as I did find prices. They scared hell out of me as I'd never get the boss's approval as it wouldn't get a lot of use at the moment based on recent years.
Then again, if I DID have a decent one it would no doubt get used!

I do want to make a hard canopy for the 130 so I suppose the real Q is - how do I design the 'roof top' section of that to facilitate mounting of a RTT in future?
