By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.

I've just started looking for a shade solution to complement my 2x2.5m awning off the side of the No5 camper. With the rear kitchen I need/want some more shade behind the trailer, currently I've been using a tarp, but that can be fiddly and painful to set up.
Was looking in Freddies Fishing today and saw the Oztrail Event shade dome things, which led me to this thread! If you have one, would you buy another? Pro's, con's? Setup time/fuss?
I really want something quick and easy to setup. Probably would use it on my own as much as with the Mrs, so really needs to be a 1 person setup as well.
After checking out the Coleman I ended up going for the Outdoor Connection Coolum 430 for a myriad of reasons.
- Packed up it takes up considerably less space than the Coleman.
- It weighs less than the Coleman.
- The majority of the frame is flexible so it can withstand wind gusts more easily.
- The frame is external which means you can tie it down more substantially if needed.
There are downsides however, least among which is that it is harder to put up. I doubt I'd be able to put it up on my own. I've seen the Coleman pulled down solo. It also costs a bit more than the standard Coleman; but is comparable to the taped seamed Event 14.
Point 3 was the clincher for us. First weekend we got it it survived some wind (we were at Moreton for the ANZAC day long weekend - the night of the 24th was interesting). I could not believe it lived through the gusts. It also battled through a storm and with two sides on it against the prevailing tornado it kept 7 people comfortable and dry.
I'd never bother taking it unless I was setting up for a while though. Takes 15 or so to get up and pegged and the same to pack down, with two people.
thanks for the insight!
I'm undecided on what to get... so for now I might just sleep on it and look for other alternatives...
If you want a quick and easy setup you might be better off with one of the fold out gazebo's.

Had my Coleman event 14 setup for the last week here at Cowes and even with the thunderstorm and flash flooding it remained completely dry under the gazebo.

I have used one several times. Great kit but heavy and bulky. Cheers
