sand pegs - what's the best length?

Hi all

I have never really done much beach camping but will be in September on Moreton Island which will involve using a large tarp (7m x 6m)

What's the best length sand page to use in soft sand? I have a number of 350mm long plastic sand pegs and a few 450mm long sand pegs.

I need to buy some more, but with little experience here with a tarp of this size and sea breezes, I just want to hear other people experiences before I fork out on a heap of sand pegs and find I have bought the wrong size.

You would be best off with some of either of these.

I had my awning tied down with these during high winds in sand and they held well.

And these are good and I will buy some soon

I would go with 450......only problem is at 450 they are only good for sand.

I will measure up the ones I have at home.

yea,, at 450 you need a club hammer too,,

Go the 450, and make sure you have a lot of poles and ropes for a tarp that size. Once the wind gets hold of it will need some anchors. Also springs on your ropes are best as they take a bit of pressure off the pegs. A few ridge poles wouldn't hurt either.

As far as blue screw pegs are concerned, the long ones meant for sand are great in really soft sand like on the frontal dunes but once you go where the surface underneath is compacted like up the back in the shady areas they are a bitch to get in the ground.

Which part of the island are you heading for ?

I have a set of those and they are great,as long as the sand is dry.If it is wet,deep down,they are hopeless,as you can't get them deep enough.

There are a few other brands around,similar style.

I use them on our foxwing on the beach,and they work well.

I found the bluscrews to be useless in sand. Get some long thick ones and a big hammer. A range of sizes is useful .
Springs are also excellent to minimise the wind jerking the pegs until they come loose.

The tarp I have uses 26 poles which I have plus a ridge bar.

I'll get some springs for the guy ropes and I think I'll just buy the 450mm sand pages for peace of mind.

We have an old fishing tackle box filled with various sizes and types of pegs stored in the camper. Steel ones work best in grassland, plastic ones go best in sand, but soft sand needs longer pegs to get down far enough to hold. Use a spring on each one.

Something I have found that works well are broken hay rake twines (from the wheel type). Where they bolt on is a perfect hook and where they tend to break often forms a sharp point.
