There seems to be different opinions on this, I was also under the impression a total fire ban refers to open fire .. not gas or portable cookers. I've camped in the Yengo NP before where there was a total fire ban, rangers came around to remind us of the ban .. and said "only gas cooking allowed".Quote:

Total Fire Ban Rules
During a Total Fire Ban no fire may be lit in the open. Fire permits are suspended during a Total Fire Ban. This includes incinerators and barbecues which burn solid fuel, e.g. wood or charcoal.
You may use a gas or electric barbeque, but only if:
- it is on a residential property within 20m of the house or dwelling
- if it is a picnic area and the appliance is approved by council, National Park or State Forest
- it is under the direct control of an adult
- the ground within 2m of the barbecue is cleared of all materials which could burn
- you have an immediate and continuous supply of water available.

I was up and Yengo the other day and we had a roaring fire going as it was bloody wet the whole weekend.
There are also very clear signs in most areas as to whether you can light a solid fuel fire - and more often than not, there are the requesit pits and areas to light them safely.
Good to see the formal rulings governing solid fuel fires and the sparks - best to stick to fires in approved state / council camp sites is the moral of the story.
Can I try to redirect the convo back to bush camp oven cooking, now we are semi clear as to the rules of engagement and the fact that pedro cannot be trusted with a box of matches and only has a continuous and uninterupted supply of beer................:p
well, i bought my first camp oven just last week after seeing a demo at the maitland 4wd show! haven't had a chance to use it yet, cause i haven't had the time... (making trip preparations) but i can't wait to get into it! i also bought a camp oven cook book to get some decent recipies!

I got a Bedourie pressed steel one mainly cos a mate had one used it all round Australia and said it was quite good. I think most prefer the cast iron ones tho. The Bedourie seems to cook OK as long as you keep the food off the bottom with a trivet. Its a bit lighter than cast, the lid doubles as a frypan and because it has a flat top you can brush the ash off easily to inspect the food. I'm happy with it for now.
Speaking of cast iron I hear the "rolls royce" one is made by Furphy in SA.
trivetts are a very handy iten no matter what type of oven you use...
just got my self another one today at the camping show.... got one for both my ovens now...
can we have a photo of a trivett???
