i might add that the child bride hadnt even peeled an orange in anger before we married :P

to say she had a loving mother would be the understatement of a lifetime.

the big advantage was i got to teach her how i liked things done :P

33 years later she is still telling me i am wrong in her own sweet way :P

    Hillbilly update

Tried 2 x loaves as mentioned in the book, both using the gas ring kit.
Attempted heat from below for 1/2 and heat from above for 1/2 - failed as it didn't rise properly.

I thought it was due to me opening it all the time, but on the second run, realised that the downward gas jet direction is just not sufficienct to get the thing hot enough on it's own.

I also tried roasting some veggies with the heat from above, but managed to get them slightly warm after a good 30 minutes - was VERY windy where I was however, so that could have been it.

Reckon that heat is required from both ends - despite advice to the contrary.

Will be trying again with heat beads from above for breads etc.

I guess it's all about trial and error - one day I'll have it sizzling like it did at the expo.......

The best way to use a camp oven,
Have a good fire to produce nice coals,
Dig hole in ground , slightly larger than oven,
Pre warm oven & lid in fire,
Place some coles in bottom of hole,
    Place oven in hole,
    Put food in.
    Put lid on,
Place coles on lid, & PRESTO YOUR IN BUIS.

A cake takes aprox. 25 to 35 mins @ medium heat.
Large roast anything from 1 hour to 3 depending on size and your tast @ med. heat.
Pizza 8 mins. at very hot ie 320+ Deg C

    Some exprementation wil perfect!

How do I know how hot?

A little spit that instantly sizzels away very hot etc.
A small bit of white paper turns light brown in mod. heat after 30 secs.
At very hot in a fiew secs.

It just takes practice, there are some good books on thr subject so look for them.

I always say camping has nothing to do with deprovation, cooking around the camp fire is fun and everyone can get involved , There is no excuse for not eating good and interesting meals on camping trips, it just takes emagination and planing . So no more spam ect.
