roof top tents are fantastic lived in one for nine months when we travelled around Oz a few years back, took about five minutes to set up and pack down.
For 'guerilla camping' of the fast and light variety we use WA made instenttents, take about 2 minutes to put up and take down and only cost about $150.

While i,m exploring all options, i,m going to use a custom made aliminium roof rack from my shorty, on the Defender. As its only around 2/3 the length of a LWB defender, i,m wondering how RT/Tents can be/or are attached to the top of the rack as i don,t want to shorten it, to make room for the tent, and keep it lower, tent and rack at ame heigtht, consequently, the rack and a roof top tent would need to overlap, possibly, with several roof bars, same height as the top of the rack. I,d need 1.4 mtrs for an arb R/T tent but i,m only left with about 1 mtr, behind the rack at the rear of the truck. The question is,,,would i need to drill holes in the top rail of the rack or add another cross bar to provide enough mounting points, or are they attached with J bolts or some type of sliding clamp fitting? Anybody know how (most) roof top tents are secured to a roof rack?
Any ideas, thoughts, etc. (excluding extra wind drag),
    Laurie

    BlackWolf Turbo Tents

Might be a little late with the reply but - I bought a Turbo 240 with all the annexe attachments in November 2008. The best tent I've had in the last 40 years. I recommend them. Even managed to get my wife to come along !

In the Turbo tent it has the 'C' type of door. Where the zip is shaped in a large 'C'. I have found on previous tents owned that this type of zipper ends up needing two hands to open and that is the first place the flywire tends to rip or tear. I am not saying this will happen with these particular tents. Just a thing i hate. The RV-5 which measures 2600 by 2600 internal has the door into the tent with a zipper in the centre running top to bottom. There is another two zippers which start in the centre down the bottom and open to each side. Hope this makes sense. So all three zips when closed meet at the bottom in the centre. That way the whole front wall of the tent is the door. Oh yeah the Black Wolf turbo 300 measures 3000 by 3000 internal. it has better head room than the RV-5 however i liked the RV-5 better. I felt the RV-5 had better ventilation options with the windows. The extra walls and fly is easier to install on the RV-5 as well.

I made the salesman set up both in his shop side by side and walked through both and looked at the different options for ages. The RV-5 ended up being about $300 cheaper after getting the extra walls and fly to make a second room for both.

There is 4 of us in the tent. My wife and i and the two little-uns.

    Just my personal choice.
packaged up would your oztent fit in the tub of my 130 ?? think its around 1750 longish ??
just its either that and comfort or an ex british army 9x9 which would be harsh in comparison lol
