    Tent fabric maintainance

    I have a roof tent made from a heavy duty canvas. It's quite old....but for the amount of time that I use it I wouldn't really need to buy a new one.
    Time is beginning to take it's toll on the fabric though and I wondered if there is anything available to rejuvernate the canvas?
    Seeing as purpose made products for tent care are hard to come by out here in Dubai...are their any home made remedies or recipies that I can adopt?

    hot clean Vegie oil massaged into the canvas and left to dry in the sun after wiping off the excess works, but then the ants will love it. Its a similar theory to the oilskin canvas used for Drizabones... Animal Fat also works.

    Both methods smell after awhile...

    I have seen canvas re-waterproofing stuff in 4 litre cans. I would try emailing Ken Hall at Freedom Camping in Melbourne - nothing in it for him but he's normally good for advice for campers.

    look here, I think this might be the stuff JDNSW mentions:

    I've used this stuff before - on a canvas trailer canopy, the canvas was once blue.
    I used a Gerni to pressure clean the canvas and then when it was dry I put this stuff on.
    Worked very well and by adding blue paint tinter it also restored the colour. Don't know if you can get it over there but I guess there must be something similar.

    Hunt out a leather dressing product called coachaline or maybe coachalene, used it years ago.

    Makes things smell of beer for a while, but don't we all?

    I can certainly recommend Bradmill "DuraDux" trouble will be whether you can get hold of it there.

    I think Bradmill are the guys that make the really good quality canvas so that would probably be good stuff.

    We have a few ACE Hardware stores and some DIY places...looking at that link has given me afew ideas.
    I have found some Nikwax UV spray....so will try to treat it with that also.
