The larger model boils enough water for two very large mugs of tea or coffee with enough water left over to wash up the cups. If the kettle is overfilled it tends to boil over quite quickly and vigorously.
The fire pan helps with stability and avoids the problem of the fire collapsing when the kettle is removed. I have used the kettle quite successfully on a variety of surfaces including wet ground in drizzling rain and on a table with an insulating pad under the pan.
Unlike gas stoves which become very ineffective in windy conditions, the Kelly Kettle improves in the wind if the ventilation hole in the fire pan is faced into the wind.
The problem of storing a fire blackened billy is eliminated because all the blackened surfaces are on the inside.
So far the only fire source I have not had success with was pages from a glossy magazine. They produced too much ash. Anything else seems to work well. I have successfully used a metho stove, grass, leaves, bracken fern, twigs, and pine cones. The amount of fuel needed is much less than with a conventional billy.
I had previously used a borrowed stainless steel Eco-Billy and prefer its fold away handles to the Kelly Kettle's handle and chain. However the handle and chain work well enough.
While my Kelly Kettle is normally stored in one of the easily accessible external storage compartments of my Trayon camper, I had occasion to take it out temporarily in its first week when we had a blackout at home. With an all electric house, it was a quick, convenient way to make a cuppa. You really can use them anywhere.

Well, I had to raise this thread from the dead. I was just forced to use my kelly kettle for the first time because my electric kettle seems to of died.

What a great piece of fun it is. Not only was it fun watching flames bellow from the top and get boiling water but I can see why people are so keen on this. Easy clean up also. And seems not to take to long to cool down for packing.

Now time to decide if to get the smallest one for hiking or if it is still to big.

I used mine on ANZAC weekend and it was great. It impressed many and I am sure a few extra sales are coming their way. The AULRO discount is still available despite what the banner add says.
