Thread: Got a bad back - any suggestions for camping mattress?

Jock, I don't know whether you have a tent big enough to take a camp stretcher or not, I have a crook, back, neck and shoulder, so I bought at K-Mart (camping section) a fold up camp stretcher with a built in air bed and found it quiet comfortable and I didn't have to struggle getting up off the ground as when using my swag. It packs up into a cloth bag about 1'x1'x3' (30cmx30cmx100cm), the frame is aluminium, similar to the fold up chairs and it is easy to setup and pack away. Alternatively a Swag with high density foam mattress isn't bad, mine has a canvas base so I set it up on a Tarp, if you wanted extra comfort a self inflating mattress on top of the Swag mattress will help, Regards Frank.

I know how you feel, 19 yrs ago I fractured a vertabrae and damaged 7 discs in my back and neck, it put me out of action for a number of years.

I went to clark rubber and got a 5" high density foam mattress and have used it in the back of my troopy or on the ground (I had a breathable vinyl type cover made for it) for the last 10 years and have always had a good nights sleep. When I need to I roll it up and it is about the size of a swag.

go into clark rubber and lay one on the floor and tell them to go away for 10 minutes while you lay on it and test it out.

Everyone injury is different so try a few different ones while you are there, you may need a softer mattress.

I have had a bulged disc operated on twice in two years and I love camping...mine was so bad my right leg went numb....sleeping requirments....get a 4wd inflatable mat big green ones with thick foam....I have not had a problem with that one though now we have a camper...100mm high density foam custom made.... I slept great on our 6 week trip

I have buggered discs in the back and neck thanks to Army training in the 60's.

We have a camp bed that sounds similar to Tank's.

It is a stretcher that we got from "The big Python", an affair that you put up by pulling on the legs. They run along the sides and down the middle, so it is very flat to lie on. (Works like some of those new type 3m x 3m shelters, with all the cross arms.)
I removed the air mattress (too soft) and replaced it with a medium density foam one from Clark Rubber.

The bed also has slightly sprung legs, so it can be used on uneven ground

Yes, mine's the same except a single, first time I used it I had the mattress pumped up too hard, next time with less air, very comfortable and the big bonus, at least for me is that it is normal bed height off the ground which makes it easy to get in and out, strong enough to support my weight of 106Kgs., Regards Frank.
