Our set-up on a camping trip to Albany last week.

Just using an OZTENT RV5 at the moment - extra panels to enclose the front awning area are on order, but not available in time for this trip. Plus the Black Widow awning on the side of the Disco gives us that extra bit of room under cover. Came in handy this trip, as we did get a bit of rain occasionally.

Tent, stretchers, chairs & a couple of small tables all fit up on the roof. Don't have a roof rack as such - just three "Rola" roof rails, plus I've added two "Rhino Rack" legs on the left side to bolt the Black Widow awning to. The steel braces that I made between the top of the Rhino legs and the Rola rails give a bit of extra carrying room on that side of the vehicle, and the OZTENT sits on these. The rest of the gear is packed into one of those Rhino roof luggage bags and strapped onto the rear two Rola rails. Simple - but it works.

Hi BMKal, looks good. We also have the RV-5 and find it excellent. If we are staying for more than one night, we now put up a tarp and erect the Oztent under it. This gives us a second sunshade/rainroof plus we can erect and take down the tent in the heat or the rain and remain comfortable. I usually string a tarp fron the roof rack of my Defender but those roll out awnings look very good. Cheers, 130man.

Hi BM Kal, Nice set up you had down in Albany. Although it won't fit in our Series 1 80", I did use the following OzTent RV5, OzPod for ease of loading on the roof, just slides in and out & I can manage this solo. Sorry it was in our Outlander, but he is being traded next year for a new 90" Defender which I will install the following:

Custom made insert that holds fridge/fridge slide & an Ikea office chest of drawers that held a lot of the food, cutlery, crockery etc. The Cobb cooker was strapped onto this & the whole lot braced to the tiedown points, and rear seat belt anchors. On the 6500km trip this proved quit a good set up.

Camp set up at Geralia Station on the Gulf of Exmouth, nice spot handy for fishing on the Gulf. The OzPod was handy as it took the tent, annex side & front walls, as well as two fishing rods & all the tackle.

Quick overnight stop at Kirkalocka Station on the way back from Pardoo Station down the Great Northern Hwy. We also had an Aerobed Queen size air bed that had a rechargeable bayonet fitting pump. Can be charged off 12vDC or 240v, and was very comfortable - worked out about 6 inflation's between recharges. The one extra we now take is a separate chair for the dog, because he nicked my wifes & she let him?:D

Thanks Simon. I'll keep an eye out for the Ozpod - might be the way to go if we stick with just using roof rails rather than a full rack. Have now received the side and front panels, so more gear to carry. Also found the fly to be worth its weight in gold.

Looking at buying another vehicle in the near future, so will have to figure out what is going to go up on the roof on that one. My son wants to buy the D2, so for what the Landrover dealers in Perth are willing to pay as a trade, looks like the old girl will be staying in the family.

Rainbow Beach camping New Years Eve. Second hand Southern Crosss camper trailer shakedown run and then a trip to the beach to laugh at the nong who thought it would be a good idea to take a 2WD Hilux around the rocks on high tide at the Rainbow Beach carwash.

Posted some pics a few months back of our camper but didn't have any pics of what it is like set up. Remembered to take some over Christmas/New Years this year. This is on Day 8 of the stay so is very settled in aka messy. It took nearly 30 mins to set up camp as is before we had the rods out to get some Bass.

Mattress off the spare bed. Rolled up section in top of canvas door frame includes a separate insect mesh section
The top white bit comes off completely and we use it as a normal, tipping trailer the rest of the time.

No brand Tombie.

My partner's a practical kind of bloke. He was sick of the swag on long trips & we had a trip to Cape York planned. He wanted to take a camper but nothing took his fancy except for the expensive ones. So he nutted out his wish list with me, worked out how the mechanics of how it could work, drew up some plans & threatened to make it himself.

I could see the Cape trip taking another 5 yrs to get off the ground so took them to a local 'heavy duty' trailer maker. Got a quote and he made sure everyone was really sure about the idea/theory before they got started.

The canvas bit was just done by someone local. Took them a few attempts to get the pattern right so there are a few more seams then there should be. The trailer maker has since gone out of business which is a good thing because we found his work a bit shoddy. At least we know what is important/what we'd do different next time.

Works for us :)

I'll try and post some more (this is my first post!).
