With your vehicle, if you are going on longer trips and tend not to stay for longer at any one place, I suggest you get a roof top tent. It takes probably about 15 to 20 minutes to set it up or put it back together and you are ready to drive.
There are various sizes available either for two or four people. Also there are various brands out there. I suggest to forget the cheap ones and mainly look at the 'Ezy Awn', which is in my humble opinion the best one in terms of quality.
A roof top tent also has the advantage that you can basically leave all your bedding gear in the actual tent and pack everything together.
Obviously if you want to switch to a Defender I strongly recommend a pop up roof.
Cheers,
Daniel

Thanks but i have a tent that I can set up in about 10 mins with pins and I have space (4.8m x 3m). Quality canvas and all that. And its only brand new, used twice.
I am looking for ready made and order trailer that can fit the tent and all else giving us a comfy and safe ride up front.
BTW I am a BIG fan of the Kimberley gear. Is well built and well thought of.
Mate...full rack and muscles is the way to go. I have a full rack Rhino, Oztent is around 25kilos.....in this pic ( plus 3 kids inside and a 60 litre Waeco, food, sleeping bags etc etc) on the roof is the Oztent plus side and front panels, chairs, aluminium kitchen, stretcher bed, table and other bits and pieces. Easily put more up there if needed. Plus I get it all up there and down myself....helps having the step at the rear. If there is only 3 in the car.....with a rack you will have bucket loads of space.
Regards
Stevo
mate, forget the roofrack,, sell it and the tent and buy a camper.
I understand its a wonderfull tent---

If you want to go with the trailer arguably the best second hand ones on the market are the ex RAAF Track Trailers. You may be able to get them for $2-2500.

You will have to wait for about 16yrs,and then the kids wont want to go with you
Then theres heaps of room
On a serious note,i would go the rack,i have found trailers to be a pain.If you have a cargo barrier you will also find you can stack gear and get a lot more in.
Thanks Paul. Yeah just from a safety perspective I want to get a cargo barrier.
Inside - where does one acquire such a tough trailer?
I will start to investigate racks. Anyone know what I can sell a half rack, steel, from ARB with mesh floor? Might try eBay.
