    Roof Tents......

I have to purchase a rooftop tent/ annexe for a camping trip that's coming up shortly and have a couple of questions......

Has anyone purchased a tent from the company on the gold coast ?? Gordigear ?? If so are they any good / value for money ?? The enclosed pic is one they are selling at the moment for $1500.00

Or would I be better to bid for an "aussie traveller" tent/ annexe that's on ebay at the moment, roughly the same sort of money so far .

Final question is........ is the annexe big enough for two boys 9 + 12 to sleep in ??

    Hi Jerryd,

I have always stayed clear of any setup that is attached to the vehicle. Before I bought a trailer I used a centre pole touring tent which folded nicely into a large square bag which went onto the roof racks nicely. I preferred the option of setting up away from the vehicle a little especially if parking areas were logged off as the are in so many places now. This is similar to my model Freedom Camping, The Tent and Camping Specialists

    Hi Jerryd,
I purchased a rooftop tent from gordigear ($925 without the annexe) months ago and they had it shipped to Cairns. I couldn't be happier with it. Used it on half a dozen trips ontop of my disco. Rain, wind and crocodiles 20m away . Camped next to an open sky roof top tent of the same model and honestly couldn't tell the difference, except for the price. Gordigear cost less. I am so happy with mine hope u r 2

I'm hoping to collect the one that's pictured in the next couple of days, I've looked at a few others which cost heaps more and there doesn't seem to be much difference.

I was impressed with the swagman tents, but can't justify that cost for something that will only get used 2 / 3 times a year

I think I know which brand I'll be getting when I can,, getting sick of the swag,,

And when you need to get fire wood or go for a scenic drive you have to pack up your bed and gear to do so

I use a single pole touring tent , Not what you wanted to hear , thats my 2 bobs worth

You only have to be stung by a scorpion once to know the benefit of a roof tent..

I spent a year in one going around oz as well as 2 others on various trips (cape etc) and wouldn't want anything else. I'm a fan of the larger full length ones which give you the annex beside the car.

The amount of times I've woken up to minor floods (6 inches, while not a major pain would have been in a ground tent!) stung by scorpions, seen people nearly trampled by boar in the night etc... you just get that peace of mind that you are 2 mts above the ground, and what ever is down there can stay down there..

The argument that you have to pack up each time you move the car is valid, and obviously they don't suite everyone. However it really does take less than a minute to pack one up so it never bothered me at all. Also if you are concerned you can always pack a second smaller tent to use if you need to.. but 99% of the time you wont use it because the roof tent is so easy.

Its also great in the middle of the night then the missus starts with the 'did you hear that noise? There is something down there!!' you can say 'well wake me again if it works out how to climb a ladder'.. as of yet... nothing has

Calls of nature during the night for us older folk can be a pain with a roof top tent. Falling down the ladder or if too lazy to climb down - piddling over the ladder - yuk
