OK, a less than perfect example. A UK porsche is RHD and half the Aussie price so I'm in the ballpark.
Also, a D3 in the US costs about the same as here. I had a great laugh at my old boss. In the US my D3 was the same price as his Merc E class. In Australia his was exactly double. Was it any better because he was paying double? If LR can build RHD and import at a sensible price then so can the rest of them. The D3 is a LHD car that they made RHD for certain markets.
And the importer of Mercedes and Porsche to other countries does not?

but also on the example of vehicles imported etc. why is it that australian car manufacturers can build and ship cars to USA and sell them cheaper there than they can sell them in Aus. refer to Ford Capri convertable in the 90's and the commodore that was sold a few years back in US.
my guess is the market again. we have population of 22 mill here in aus with the land mass almost of north america and population similar to new york state, total population 304 million. supply and demand.
in my opinion a small price to pay for living in the best country in the world.
That's an absolute copout.
We are getting ripped off plain and simple.
I needed two door seals for my BMW. Locally they were $1000ea ex GST. I paid someone in the US to go to a dealer, buy me the pair and ship to me, landed for about $700 AUD.
Oh and that $1000ea was dealer price, what BMW Germany were going to charge BMW Aus.
so move..
and stop bothering those of us that actually DO enjoy living here in aus :P

I agree with the OP.
I recently bought a Milwaukee Drill, Impact driver, 2 High capacity Li-Ion batteries, and charger from the US, all new, for $504Au delivered, then bought an Australian charger here for $150 total $654.
Best price I could find here was around $650 each, with one low capacity battery each.
Some difference.

I am caught between two worlds. I have bought many Land Rover bits locally. I think it is great that we have many Land Rover specialist suppliers to choose from (a couple of GOOD ones in Vic) and we should support them.
However, there is a point where it is just silly.
Case in point:
Local quote for a Series 3 speedo head - $900 (I kid you not - I kept the email) Purchased one in UK for for about $100 delivered in 5 days.

Viscous coupling for P38...NSW LR parts supplier $2200+GST+delivery; Vic supplier $1500. Asked the NSW person if that price included the complete VC housing+bearing +seals etc... got a terse "No, that's just the v-c-"...
Phoned a bloke in a shop in the UK late on (our) monday evening. He threw in 2 rear suspension bushes as well .. parcel was delivered to my door on the following Friday morning...same week. total cost including Mastercard Forex: A$615... priceless

similar issue with new key fob...local big name Bris LR dealer wants $650 +GST and 6 weeks to get me a new fob...money up front.
Sent SOS to nephew doing a stint in the UK: 153 quid from the dealer near him (exVAT -export) plus A$7 postage (First class airmail ) to Aust. Total time 2 weeks.
so why does local dealer need to put nearly $300 for being a messenger boy...because they can I suppose (hello 'rip rip woodchip' )
