    Tieing tarp to D1 roof

    hey all,

I'll be picking up a new tarp at some stage soon, a nice big one to shelter the swag in rough weather. Had an experience recently that showed the swag isn't as water proof as i'd like!

I'll be rigging the tarp up awning style, off the side of the car. Like this (hope you don't mind me stealing your pic, sschmez!)

Need ideas on how to tie it to the roof as i don't have any sort of roof racks or rails or anything.
I was thinking something like a mini G-Clamp on the guttering? or some sort of clamp, that I could then loop the tarp eyelet onto.

Anyone else bought/made something similar? I'll go raid Bunnings tomorrow and see if they have anything suitable!

    Cheers,
    Rob

HaHa ......... thought it looked familiar

Glad you like it ...... mines easy, cable tied to my rack

What about that sail track stuff attached to the gutter to slide the tarp into..... Only thing is, clearance to open the doors without wrecking the tarp ... my rack takes the tarp much higher than the doors.

someone will have a great idea

    simple....

grab a pair of those clips that allow you to attach a rope to the middle of a tarp or a handfull of those spring loaded wood clamps that are basically light duty jumper cable clamps use those to attach the tarp to the gutter. 2 extendable tent poles placed in the eyelets next out from the roof will let you lift it clear. Rope off from the top of the poles to the front and rear bumpers to stop the poles from moving inwards and then peg down.

    OR.

tie some cotton rope to each corner, sew some rags or suede patches to the eyelets of the tarp that go along the roof and then tie off over the roof of the vehicle to the spokes in the wheels then prop the tarp as before.

In all events remember to set up your lean to on the up hill side of the vehicle or you will wear the run off from the roof.

I have found the plastic version if the spring clamps to be better than the steel ones as the rubber feet soon fall off.
You can buy a box of assorted plastic clamps from Supercheap for AFAIR under $20.
You will have to experiment with which size to use as the small ones are pretty weak but the big ones are very strong.

Ahh go onn,,, don't be a sook dude,, just tek screw some hooks straight into the roof of the Disco

A couple of holes stategically (spelling) placed in the gutters, Conner to tarp with small hooks maybe could be an option,,
Of course you could always buy a roofrack to hang it from,, gives you some more storage space too

Hi you might like to look at getting a few of these. They are called deflappers, one end clamps to the tarp and the other can be looped around a roof bar, rack or even the tops of the window frames.

Going to set up something simular on mine but havent got around to it yet.

They are designed to stop roll out caravan awnings flapping in the wind and available from caravan suppliers and sometimes on ebay.

    Hope this helps Andrew

or you could simply jam your doors onto a small length of rope including the top of your tail gate and attach your tarp to the ends of the rope.
Pack up by just opening the doors.

Why does almost everyone rig their tarps off the side of their vehicles?

I have always set mine up off the rear as it provides protection while accessing my gear in the back - fridge, tucker, sleeping gear etc. I attach the tarp via eyelets to two 'J' shaped hooks welded to a lightweight (20mm SHS) crossbar that is independant to any roof rack that I may have fitted. I then have one pole in line with the drivers side and sufficient tarp to peg to the ground on the drivers side. Two more poles are then used on the passenger side. This does take a few minutes to set up but gives far better shade and some wind protection - although if extra windy I fit a few extra poles and guy ropes.
I use a 12' x 18' tarp and have fitted a few extra eyelets at strategic points.

Maybe this pic explains it better than the above attempt.

Xtreme i had that exact thought last night (admittedly, while chucking my Matchbox D2 around ) as it would then give sheltered cooking space as i use the rear bumper as a benchtop!

Also remembered these things, Quickgrip clamps. Might give them a shot, can get them in all different sizes and the additional length of rod provides something to loop/tie an eyelet onto. just not sure how well they'll clamp to the gutter.
I'll get down to Bunnings this weekend and pick some up, see how they go!
