Thanks guys. I'll do some more searching.

Was the lower bearing in yours replaced with a roller when you had it rebuilt?
I think it also comes down to how much time was spent on matching the output shaft to the babbit bearing on assembly. I cannot imagine the rebuider spending much time to get the clearances tight, and they would probably just get the parallel hone near enough.

    Philip,
I seem to recall that my enquiries at the time revealed that early type boxes that were modified to take the needle roller bearings didn't last either and once that mod had been done, the box couldn't be done any other way.

I had considered updating the car about 4 years ago, but since then I've decided that everything is too complicated for its own good these days, so I intend to keep it. Apart from this leak, it's in extrememly good condition. It hasn't done any real off-road work for ages now and I just use it as a heavy-duty station wagon. Body and interior are excellent. Engine now has a slight rear main leak but the clutch is original and the clutch cylinders have only recently been replaced for the first time. It's been on gas for a year or two now and I'm thinking of removing all the petrol clutter from under the bonnet in the interest of access and serviceability.

What's involved in installing the 92> box?

The 92 boxes were only identified by a note that from chassis number xxxxx , the boxes were roller bearing.
I think they are exactly the same to fit to the car.

BUT you would have to check out the metric vs imperial hose fitting issue , as I think the 92 boxes are metric.

The boxes changed again slightly in 93? in that the drop arm has only a hole in the end not an integral tie rod end. As the new boxes come with arm you should be aware of that also.
AFAIK old arms fit new boxes and vice versa
