    Excess fuel consumption

    Hey rangie fans im Adza.

We have had our 92 efi auto 3.9 for about 4 years now and even though i know they're thirsty ours seems to be a bit more noticeably bad recently. I have replaced the following parts with new; ignition coil, spark plugs, air filter, air flow meter and distributor.
Car has about 270000 ks on clock.
We just camped over easter and towing a medium pop up jayco style camper with not a great deal of gear i got under 300kms till nearly empty.
Is this normal or should i look at a dyno to see if there are any probs?
Our overflow bubbles but doesn't get hot on temp, hopefully this is because i found that there was a small rupture in hose going into valley bellow induction unit at top of motor and will fix that leak tomorrow.Any help would be greatly appreciated as i've spent what's needed to keep running a fourby i love.

Are you running enough timing advance? It will run better with 10 degrees BTDC, especially on premium.

Car has about 270000 ks on clock.
Look , I think it is a bit much to expect new car performance and economy from an engine with 270KK on it.

Injectors are wear items which should be replaced every 120-160KK, and the sensors are probably well worn by now.

It would probably be a miracle if the engine has lasted 270KK without cam and head reconditioning, but cam chain, cam, new head gaskets, reconditioned heads would each all help a bit, if they have not been done in the last few years. The rings would have a lot of wear and blowby by now also.

Without knowing what your economy is in L per 100Km how much your camper weighs and how hilly the country and how fast you were going it's really impossible to know whether your economy is good bad or indifferent.
As a guide my 92 with extensive engine mods, O2 sensors, new injectors, head work and recon about 100KK ago gets about 14.5 Lper 100 pulling a 600Kg camper at 100-110 on flat ground. In hilly country such as the Hunter Valley this drops to 17L per 100Kms. This is about a good as you will get with an RRC without going to lean cruise etc.

If you say use 75 litres in 300Km then that is 25L per 100Kms , which would be on the bad side of in the ballpark in hilly country towing a 1100Kg camper . You would probably not get better than say 18-20 with a perfect engine under those circumstances and about 16-17 on flat ground.

    Thanks Phil

To my knowledge heads etc have never been done, i have booked in for compression and general test of motor for next week. No major oil leaks or smoke and i do general services regularily myself. I have a vs holden ute 5 ltr for work as a bricky that i had direct injection gas put on 6 months ago and consistantly get 550 - 600 kms from 90 ltrs of usable gas. I was quoted $2100 after rebate to have the same system put in rangie by my mate who fitted the one to my ute. What sort of compression should i hope for from my motor do you reckon? If (and when) my motor goes i will either rebuild or swap for recoed as rest of car is in terrific condition. The camper weighs about 1000kg loaded and trip was marginally hilly down to Princetown. We probably did 30ks of sand tracks without camper to get to beach for fishing. Maybee i'm expecting a bit much do you think considering age?

I agree with PhillipA, 270K is well and truly up to a worn cam and timing chain, and close to needing a top end freshen up and depending on previous servicing life etc, compression could be a bit low/ rings worn etc. I wouldn't waste time and $$ fitting gas to a low compression engine (8.13:1) especially a worn one.

IF you go with a reco motor, at least use high compression pistons, a high energy ignition system and then at least you can get the most out of gas AND fuel.

Sorry guys bit over my head

Just spent best part of today fitting new hoses and flushing coolant system, changing oil, new leads and new L/H manifold + gaskets , i'm only getting my head around basic stuff i can do in my shed. How much do you think i need to spend to make the car reasonably good on petty as a tow/camper vehicle that gets used once or so a month for those purposes. I live 100 ks from a knowlgeable landy service/parts place and am limited in my experience on my car. Hope i don't come across as a clown?

    Talking To my suprise

Had a big win today. After fitting mentioned parts i went to take for a test drive this morning and bloody thing was coughing and spluttering flatout. Checked all connections and no difference. Left it for an hour out of frustration then went back and thought maybee i should try the ecu that i got from Triumph rover spares in SA. Unplugged old and installed new one and instantly fixed the problem. Wish i had have tried it before installing all other parts but it would only play up randomly. You guys come across this before? Disco motor sounds like the go any recomendation on purchase and installer? Cheers Adza.
