    Range Rover Trailer

I have started to hack my spare parts 88 Model Rangy.
With the idea of converting it into a trailer.
I plan to chop her just in front of the rear doors.
Has Anyone done it before. I can't find any information.
The only disadvantage that I can see is it will be heavy.
This is the hitch I plan on using for the brakes

I will remove the diff and axles to lighten her up a little.

This is where I'm at so far.

Nothing wrong with the idea, so long as you can balance the load properly with the correct forward bias. Find a local trailer engineer as it will need to be inspected for compliance as a trailer before registration. I have made a vehicle based trailer and it wasn't difficult in SA.

This was and still is one of my concerns. Too much weight in the bum.

Thanks for the tip I think I might have a chat to the certifying engineers before I get further with the design. (IE will I need a permanent weight installed to get the correct C of G ETC)

    Thanks Bee utey!

replacing the RRC chassis with a more conventional trailer chassis with some weight bias toward the front. The last thing you want to do is carry dead weight as ballast.

I had all intents on doing this about 4 yrs ago and kept the rear end of an 81 chassis for this purpose, complete with rear diff and all links.

Coincidentally chopped the chassis for scrap today....... way too heavy. All relevant panels also gone to scrap.

Have kept the diff, A arm bits and trailing arms for the future.

I think what changed my mind was looking at a camper trailer a mate bought new for about 13k. Body is all ally, gal chassis, has boat rack, water tank, blah, blah. Canvas part folded out with annex is huge. Also amazingly light.

All I would want different is LR hubs. No way I could build a camper as good for the price, so thinking about getting one the same without wheels and axle and 'adapting' LR A frame, diff modded without pumpkin and LR hubs and discs etc.

    cheers, DL

I knew the weight would be a draw back. But I am yet to see a camper trailer with half a tonne of firewood in the back, or 20 Palm Fronds.

So yeah I very much want to keep the tent and the trailer separate.

The things I like about it are the hydraulic disk brakes. Superior suspension. Open the rear doors for loading. Exisiting fuel tank as back up fuel, no more Jerry cans.
    Tail gate as bench space

I figure it will be around 250 KG heavier than a steal off road trailer.
Considering the vehicle towing it is around 2500 KG.
    10% is fine with me.

Someone still needs to get the wood for the campfire!

Kinda sad actually to see a rover get cut up ....

    .... looks alright ....

BUT I'll say it looks fantastic .... if you could post me the "resistor wire pack" for the "fan control speed" up on top of the fire wall where the external vent was

For ballast ... just install the mandatory water tank, right where ya need it (C of G) .... and most probably cut the door skins off and pop rivet to some pipe work and inner guard light metal sheeting ... Replace the glass with Perspex

Use the rear body of 2 four doors and turn one around to use it as a front. I would think it would look better.

Go electric brakes, override brakes, particularly hydraulics won't save you in an out-of-balance or fish-tale event and suffur if not used all the time.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

i was told once for a perfect towing trailer the axel must be rear of center 1" per foot of floor space

I plan on having no roof top at all.
    Something like this.

Removing all the inner door window & regulator parts ETC
