I had a classic RR right through the '90's and as a member of the RR club had access to all sorts of experts etc and thats what we where told at launch as the reason for the overrider's.
If you hit a pole in the center of the front of the vehicle it would have a lot more give as you weren't hitting the chassis rails head on where the overrider's where fitted, you would be bending a lot of other stuff like the crossmembers etc.
The triggers for airbags are very sensitive and need to be set off at exactly the right time to be effective.
