I must have a warped sense of fuel economy.

Example, IMHO a 1HD-FT is far more economical than a 300Tdi.

The saving in fuel of 3-4L/100km from the 300Tdi is merely compensation for it's inability to perform the degree of work a 1HD-FT will. In other words, I'd rather use 14l/100km knowing that every hill will be flattened in 5th gear instead of a slow, irritating trip.

Similar sort of comparison re 3.5 V8 and Isuzu

"...And after hill Number 355 the trip WAS a lot slower as I had broken 5th gear..., whereupon the tortoise like 300tdi caught up and CONTINUED to use less diesel...."

The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈

I've heard about the 5th gear weakness and the front diffs exploding in reverse but I can't say that ever happened, must be a LR apologists line.

    But you're agreeing, yeah?
