Gearbox & Transfer box Oil - what type?

    G'day,

i want to service my Gbox on my 83 Rangie, it has the 3 speed auto.
what is the recomended oil for the Gearbox & the Transfer case.

my haynes manual says multigrade engine oil Sae 20W/50 to API SF or SG for later boxes

for earlier boxes is says Hypoid gear oil SAE 80EP gearbox & SAE 90 EP for transfer box.

when the manual refers to early gearbox with limited slip differential is that the centre diff lock?

both haynes and LR factory manuals dont cover Auto Gearboxes. what oil do i need to get?

    Cheers,

    Chris

    G`day

If it has the factory auto .

Dextron 11D is in the book but Dextron 111 is easily found , this is for the
Chrylser A727 torqueflite it hold 8.52 litres but will keep about 4 litres when drained .

EP 90 gear oil or similar is in the book for the transfer , up untill 1988 they all use the same type oil . Transfer holds 2.8 litres as long as it is mated to the torqueflite .

In 1969 to 1970 about 200 Range Rovers got a limited slip centre diff , it was only in the very first of them , it was replaced with a lockable centre diff .

    Cheers

D III will be fine for the Auto.
Do NOT use Multi grade Engine Oil in ANY Automatic transmission

They never had Type 4 Brake fluid 10 years ago.
Same can be said about type 3 Auto trans fluid.

A good 90 weight only oil is Castrol LSX 90
It's got friction modifiers for LSD clutches, but that won't be a problem in the transfer case or diff's. It's user friendly on the Bronze Shims in the Centre diff.
If you live in a sub zero climate it will pay to use a Multi Weight gear oil. Not relevant for most of Aussie.

I used LSX90 in my Maxi Drive Diffs and transfer Case as recommended by the Manufacturer for the last 12 years. The Diff's were rebuilt with Ashcroft Crown wheel and pinion 4.11 gears just recently. The Bearing cups and drive face teeth of the gears were like new 12 years down the track.
