Thread: 86 Range Rover problems

G'day fellas. I own an 1986 Range Rover with the 3.5 injected V8 and auto 4 speed box.

I have several problems with it: Namely, an oil leak near the front of the engine.
A stubby (4WD) stick that refuses to go into N or Low Range, but will quite happily switch over into Diff Lock.
Sometimes when I change gears, the gearbox will make an audible clunk that you can feel.
And whenever I plant my foot, I get a rather short roar, followed by a bit of mumbling, then another roar, a bit more mumbling then another roar. I'm thinking Torque converter may be out or needing replacing??

The range rover currently has a 2 inch body lift in it, grinded guards, ARB Winch bar, 2 inch coil lift, and running 28" tyres (Soon to be 33"!!)

All in all though, I'm quite happy with it as I only purchased it for $1000, and some $600 for parts!

oil leak near the fron of the engine, possible timing case / crank seal. Clean it all down and go for a drive. If it is its easy to replace yourself.

Also are you trying to get into low range when stationary, because you should be moving 4kph or so when trying to slide in into low range.
