    '78 2-door transfer case/gearbox issues

Hi everyone, I'm having issues with my transfer case and gearbox in my Rangie and wondering if anyone else has had similar issues. the TC will sometimes violently force itself out of high range into neutral, usually just after starting off and this occurs on almost every steep hill start (worst time for it to happen). if i pull it back in it will kick out again once or twice before it gets over it and stays in but it makes some really horrible noises. the gearbox problems arent so bad the gearstick is just very sloppy and it doesnt like downchanging alot of the time especially changing back into 2nd and all the double clutching and rev matching in the world doesnt really help. spoke to Allan Gray from terrain tamer about it briefly and he pretty well said the T/C would have to come out, im wondering if anyone else has had these things happen? and especially if they found any cheap/easy ways to improve the problem. iv changed the oil but that didnt seem to help it although no metal chunks came out (i was expecting most of the gear teeth from the transfer to come flowing out after the noises it had been making). they are the standard boxes for the car (78 model) with a fairey o/d fitted. any wisdom would be much appreciated.

TC needs reshimming and soon it doesnt have to be removed it can be done in situ.

What sort of Oil are you running?

32 years of use probably really needs a rebuild reshim the TC will make it last longer but it will eventually drive you nuts with the gear change.
A quality modern gearbox oil will help the gear change just dont put 80-90 in it

Im using mobil 20w-50 which is what the castrol guide recommended, is there something better i should use? its got about 80 000 on the clock, how many times its been around is anyones guess but it wouldnt be more than once or twice going by the condition of everything else. what's involved in re-shimming the box? is it something an amateur mechanic should attempt or should i get help from someone who knows what theyre doing?

Its a relatively simple job, just very fiddly to refit

Methinks you assume too much. Could have gone round much more than that. Not really relevant though. At that age you should just deal with each prob as it arises. Don't put 80 / 90 EP in the TC if and when you get it re-shimmed though.

    cheers, DL

I wouldnt think that it would have been around too many times as you are only the second owner and Dr. whathisface apparently only used it to tow his boat to the coast every now and then, he was probably doing most of his driving in that mad old jag.

Before all the reshimming etc - look for the obvious - is the linkage is out of adjustment. My LT95 had your symptoms and I adjusted the fork position in the top of the tfr case (easy access through the top) and then readjusted the cable (on my 101).

As a possible interim solution when you change from hi to low and vice versa move a little and then ensure the leaver is locked in - sometimes this will lock the tfr in the required position.
