    improvements to the RRC

As fellow RRC owners you may notice these things rattle like crazy from interior parts and plastic rattles. Another issue I have had with mine is the door liners which plastic clip to the door dont work and the liner sits about 1 cm out from the door. I got sick of it so I came up with an idea which does seem to work.

Firstly I opened the doors up, and ripped out all the plastic inserts and put in nutserts. Then ripped out all the plastic clips off the door liner and drilled holes in four of the areas where clips were. Then I got rounded black allen key bolts and washers and screwed the panel back using these. So now I can unscrew the panel and rescrew it and it does not rattle and it sits tight to the metal, much easier. Only problem was the nutserts were not aligned perfectly so the allen bolts are rethreading the nutserts. Next door I put in cadge nuts which have some movement. Perfect.

Before I put the panels on I put rubber tube over the door opening lever metal linkage to stop rattles. I put silicon on actual links to stop rattles, siliconed wire a bit to stop it moving. I put flash tac on panels moving around to absorb sound and vibration.

So now the doors close with a thud, no noise, no rattles and less noise coming through. (sounds like a bmw door) I still have loads of cabin noise so I have a bit more to do, but door rattles are gone and they are also tight together.

I would welcome any advice on lowering noise and finding rattles in the dash as I have a few metal vibrations.

In addition to this I have rancho suspension, the car rides hard as a rock crashing over everything and I have not experienced the so called magic carpet ride of range rover suspension. So I just got comfort (soft I think) springs and boge dampers, the RR guy I got them off says he has put tonnes of suspension set ups in lots of RR's and is currently working on his LSE. He says this set up is the most comfortable. I will try to get it all in over the w/end and see what the change is like.

One shock and one damper in this morning before the rain. Never done it before, made an 'what to do in which order' mistake but its a simple job. Shocks the same length as the others but much thinner steel hence the comfort factor. Ranchos at full extension the same as the boge at full extension. Cant really see any difference here. I have read about the split pin breaking and mine was about to break so I will try to come up with a better idea here.

I am going to put in air bags to stop it riding too low with weight.

    much smoother

I finished putting in the suspension today. The car is smoother and maybe a bit quieter because less vibration is in the cabin. I put the same length coils in the front and back because of the heavy diesel engine and bull bar, but the front is now about 1 to 2cm higher. Looking into airbag options to get the level right.

Rovercare is going to hate me for not having photos yet, but the thing is I do, I just dont have a photo account to upload them to here.

Today I finally put airbags in. But not airbag spring helpers, I ripped out the coils and put in airbag coils. I had to fabricate some mounts and also trim the polyurethane airbag ends but it was not all that hard. I put the airbag air access behind the fuel lid so its neat. The car can now go high up and is fully adjustable.

The airbags were out of a toyota prado grande, (made to replace springs in this veh, and have nothing to do with toy) and the guy said they were the softest he has, more so than the P38 ones, which cannot go as high as these. In fact the P38 ones were going to be at full stretch all the time in my car to give a stock height. The toyota ones are stock and only halfway up so it can now go very high.

All in all I am much happier with this adjustable set up. I have always wanted airbags and now I do.

Use the "manage attatchments" button at the bottom of the posting page and directly load pictures to the site. Not perfect but quite adequate!

    Ok then, here we go
These photos show the cage nuts in the panel, I removed the nutserts as they didnt work well. You can see the allen key bolts through the liner after I put a some holes in it. On the rear doors only three holes are easy to get too although you could drill new holes anywhere I used existing ones. You can also see the flash tac I have heat gunned into place. This gives the door a thud. I also siliconed all the wires so they dont move. Also some silicon on all the metal rod joints to stop rattles.

you can see the flat bar with the 90 degree angle is the top mount for the airbag. it gives the bag a flat spot to support the bags flat polyurethane cap. The hole is for the airline. the 90 degree bend is to stop the bag moving outwards. The bag is not held into place other than car, but the bags are bigger than coils in reach so I dont see them dislocating.

You can see the flat bar welded into position phone camera is blurry) , also for anyone familiar with the rear shock mount you will notice I chopped a bit out to make the trough of the wave flat, this is to allow my new flat bar to stick out. Although thinking about this again, I didnt need to do that! the bar would have fit fine without the cut! nuts. All work is rust painted.

Next you see the bottom support which allows both original bolts to go through and bolt it to the original shock support hats. The third hole is for the bag locator. Theoretically the bag can spin on the spot and its fine to do so, but I made my top supports to narrow on purpose and put a flat spot on the bags to stop them turning. This is because the bottom locater is not centered so if the bag did spin it would move around.

The bags are prado grande coil replacements to which the guy put merc vito bases for me. With this set up I was able to fabricate these bits easier.
