Range Rover CKD production in Australia

Yes, they made an auto in 83, it would have been a chrysler 727 3 speed unit, very strong auto, so you Vin No would read something like SALLHAMV3A, then A if UK built or F if an Aust CKD unit followed by serial number probably like 131*** (1983 was 131430-to-1430400) year model code until 1984 was "A"

But, if the number after the V is 1, then it may have been built as a manual and converted to an auto later.

I read through this with interest and could help but mention my friends old classic. It was a 2 door CKD with a 4 door floor, 3 speed auto with the 3.5. I dont know where it is now unfortunately. Hopefully it wasnt rare as it was slightly modified :)

My Range Rover (purchased 2 November 1979) was one of the first assembled in SA. Three colours were available, white, red and yellow. I do not know when assembly stopped as I left SA in 1982.

RR's were still imported fully assembled when I left Leyland in 1976. We had no idea what we were going to get, or when we might get them. Colour choice was you got what you got. Some had power steering, some had cloth seat facings.

Brisbane being the last port on the voyage, we got the leftovers and precious few of them. Leyland was always cash strapped so RR's which were presold in Qld. zone were shunted off to dealers in other states as Leyland would get the money much quicker. What used to get up our noses in Brisbane was that we were telling customers we didn't have any, didn't know when we might, and the client could go to a Sydney dealer and buy one ex stock.

Apparently my 78 was fully assembled os and was bound for Africa I can't remember how my mechanic picked it

I have been looking for the very informative site on old Rangies , Range Rover classic.com ,and could not find it any more. Is it still accessible and if so, could someone tell me how to find it, please?
