    Flares, wheels and starter motor

    Hey all,

I'm a fairly new Rangie owner, an 89 Classic is sitting in the car port while the VT SS is resigned to the street.
I have a couple of quick questions that I'm hoping I can get an answer or 2.....

    1. With a 2in lift and a set of steelies that have 15x8, 5 8 134 stamped on them (not sure what the 5 8 134 is), am I able to go to 33's without cutting the guards? . I want to put a 3in spring lift at the same time I get tyres. Will that help?

    2. What are the negatives to buying the cheap rubber flares on ebay? I just find $90 compared to $700 is a wee bit of a difference.....

    3. I need advice on how to get the top bolt of the starter motor out. We managed to get about 4 turns, but then it was just too tight and we didn't want to snap it. Any tricks or tips?

    Cheers guys

    Hi and welcome.

15 x 7 with 31's and 2" lift just touched on my 74. Same tyres and lift with 15 x 8 touch more in the same place (front guards where the plastic valance meets) and will mash the top of the front arches on full artic if I'm not careful. 15 x 8's have an offset that puts the tyres outboard a little further. 33's on mine would require a guard chop with current set up.

Rubber flares only cost about $70 for the required length section from Clark Rubber, plus the cost of screws and washers. Can PM you pics of mine if you want. I don't like the look of the glass ones, but that's about the only easy two options.

Can't help with your bolt prob, except to say you could try doing it up and undoing repeatedly and see if that frees it up a bit.

    cheers, DL

The top bolt causes problems for a lot of people if it has been left there for a loooong time untouched.

A search on here will give you a few different methods for removal including using heat, and a 12 volt impact wrench.

If the head of the bolt breaks you would then be able to remove the starter motor, and using a tap and die set remove the remanents of what is left if it is still stuck. The bolt is also a lot easier to undo if the starter motor is removed without that bolt being undone. Dont ask me how I know this.

I think 31's are the biggest you will fit without some guard trimming albeit minor.

    Cheers guys,

DL, I'm with you on the rubber flares. 6 hundy for glass ones is unjustifiable, and trust me, I can justify anything (80L Engel because I drink stubbies instead of cans....). So if you could pm me a couple of pics, that would be great.

Trobbo, thanks for the tips. Will be chucking it on a hoist on sunday hopefully to have a crack at it. Heating has been discussed. At least you have given me hope that if the head breaks off, it's not the end of the world.

As for the tyres, I'll just go the chop when the time comes. Might even spend the cash I save NOT buying the glass flares to get a LRA Body lift as well....

Hey mate i have got a 93 range rover with 33inch tyres 2inch lift, had to cut the guards on each end and fold the lip on the inside of the guard as well but it does chip your paint off when you do this, and with the flares being a four door when you buy the cheap rubber flares on the back door you have to cut the flare in half because of the door, and it and most times after been cut it doesn't line up, so that's something to keep in mind cheers Luke.

    Thanks Spook.
I'm not too worried about the paint and looks, I have been giving her grief from the get go and plan on doing a lot more panel damage! It is a learning car for me, so I don't completely wreck a nicer truck when I get one!

I think tyres and rims may be needed sooner rather than later.......I may have lost the front left at 70kph on Saturday due to me trusting a rattle gun. Won't make that mistake again!
It was a fun packed 30mins on the way home through the Black Spur. It spat a fan blade at the start so it was a bit vibratory, then I lost a wheel in the middle and after I went through Healesville, I got a rear blowout! My Patrol mates were offering to give me money to get rid of her! I was tempted, but there are no lasting effects from the weekend.

As for getting the starter motor off, it took an oxy to get the head of the bolt off then a grinder to cut most of the thread off, then a right angled drill to drill a big enough hole through the remainder of the bolt to get another bolt in! But it did the trick!

    Hi there

i was a sucker and bought glass flares and broke them on the first outing,
the only problem with a four door if you have to cut then you have to cut the rear door.
The glass flares cover the area which is cut off were the rubber ones dont.im running 4inch lift with 35" so really didnt have a choice to buy glass.
