    '86 manufacture hand brake troubles

My hand brake seems to have taken on this liking for not letting go!

i'm quite sure it's an adjustment problem, however i don't have any adjuster holes in my drum :S

Has anyone out there encountered such a thing?

    please help......

The adjuster hole is an oblong slot in the backing plate at the bottom.
There is a "star" wheel inside which adjusts when turned by an FB screwdriver levered up or down.
That is if it is like earlier brake drums up to 81.

You will probably have to pull it all apart and clean all the crap out of the drum and adjuster.

I did that to mine a couple of times until I got sick of it and fitted a complete handbrake mechanism from a Disco.

Had the same problem with my D1. Try pulling the handbrake cable off and if it is not free, then soak it in diesel for a while and try to get it moving. Usuall mud gets stuck inside the cable at the drum end and wont allow it to release. Bob

you have the backplate...there's a hole with a rubber boot and a curved rod sticking out that's connected to the cable.
The cable itself is slacking off fine, i'll look closer tomorrow but i suspect that the rod isn't pulling out.
I assume it's connected to the shoe springs, and thus if the shoes won't budge, it won't either....?

The rod operates a couple of tapered slides (from memory). They will be siezed and quite possibly full of mud. Cleaning and regreasing is a temporary fix, but the whole design is rubbish (in my opinion).

There's no adjuster hole but you'll see a 1/2" square peg on the forward side of the backing plate - thats the adjuster.

Do you have an oil leak at the back of the transfer case? Oil affected shoes will often stick to the drum when left overnight. Don't ask me how I know.

That would explain what that thing is. cheers.
As for an oil leak, entirely possible....she leaks oil from here there and bloody everywhere....yet i don't actually lose any
Plus my old man's got this thing about oil spots on his driveway....Makes me put a 'drip catcher' under it...
So she just drips from somewhere else lol

mine had siezed and no amount of cleaning could fix it, ended up just finding a good 2nd hand one!
