    1990 3.9i, appalling fuel consumption

    Evening,

My 1990 RRC fuel consumption has gone right down the pan. From being able to get roughly 300 - 350km a tank a few months ago (although that was mainly highway) Im not only just getting 200 - 230 km for 60 odd litres.

Its had a service a few months ago, oil, filter, air filter, new plugs and leads. I also replaced the thermostat and ECU temp sender a couple of weeks ago.

Any ideas what to do next?

Recheck the timing, you may have bumped it or retarded it to standard. Try running 10 degrees BTDc at idle and see how it goes.

60 L? My guess you are talking lpg?
Check vacuum advance, correct plugs and leads and have they used a thicker oil?

    Driving style?

not sure how to check timing or vac. advance.

id imagine the plugs and oil were correct, done by a land rover specialist in romsey, vic.

Driving style.. perhaps. I tend to drive reasonably hard on my drive to work... but still I wouldnt expect it to drop that much.

I can get 200 MILES to about 60 litres on my 110 v8 on carbs back in England. I would have thought an EFI rangie would be better??

Both are running on petrol. In fact, the rangie over here i tend to run on 98 octane stuff.

yeh when i say roughly 60 litre its because i dont tend to run in out completely. usually fill up when it gets to about 1/4 tank.

Is it a case of ..... you took it to the mechanic ... and now it's burning the fuel? .....

BTW ... Why did you change the ECU temp sender?

    Cheers

Check with someone who has a timing light, get them to show you how it's done, then maybe you should purchase a timing light. It's a useful tool.

    hi,

the fuel consumption started getting pretty drastic a month or so ago. so a while since the service.

I changed the ecu temp sensor because id been led to believe that if that was faulty it could cause the engine to run richer (ie think its colder the whole time) so obv use more fuel. Seemed worth ruling it out for the sake of $20.

Il have a go with the timing light, thanks.

In that case double check that the sensor is working. Perhaps refit the old one or get one from a wrecked car that was working. The number of times new stuff comes up faulty is quite annoying.

No need to replace them if you suspect (guestimate) them to be at fault .... You test them first

Disconnect the 2 core multi plug off the ECU temp sender unit ....
You measure the ECU temp sender unit resistance with a multi meter .... Set it to Ohm's ....

5000 Ohms when cold .... and as the motor warms up, it starts to have less resistance untill it finally gets to about 300 (+ or -) Ohm's when at running Temp (82 degrees)

Concerning the Vacuum advance ... These are notorious for failing ... There is a black hose going to it from the plentium

Take the hose off the plentium side and suck on it ... It should hold vacumm
If you keep sucking air then it is Kaput

ALSO ... Check that the vacuum connection hole in the plentium is clear (I had one that had a blocked hole) .... use a Pin to clear it

    Cheers
    Mike
