im aware of what mike is talking about, in fact it is a check I already did couple of weeks ago (think I saw it mentioned on another forum.. landyzone.co.uk) . No problems with it, when i disconnected the tube from the plenum chamber and sucked it held a vacuum.

To be honest Im only young, at 22 so certainly dont know as much as a lot of the older guys on here. but that doesnt mean im stupid, and just because i havnt come across a certain tool or way of doing things doesnt mean im stupid or its not worth suggesting things to me, just means i havnt come across that particular thing!

Iv done a lot of basic work on my defender back home in England (brakes, clutch slave cylinder, rebuilt swivel & bearings etc) as well as fitting a later engine, different transfer box and new clutch. admittedly this was at a friends garage where i had help where necessary, but we all gotta start somewhere!

sorry i realise your not having a go, but i hate the assumption that because i havnt heard of one thing, i must be an ignorant fool whos incapable of working on my car. had it before on another forum, i was asking for some help with some wiring, and because id never heard of a piggyback spade connector one of the members assumed i was a numpty and suggested it wasnt worth offering me any help!

anyway, back on topic.. i just did 160 km highway.. and the needle has gone to just over half... so pointing to roughly 300 km to a tank. does this sound about right? perhaps it is just driving style?

Disconnect the 2 core multi plug off the ECU temp sender unit ....
You measure the ECU temp sender unit resistance with a multi meter .... Set it to Ohm's ....

5000 Ohms when cold .... and as the motor warms up, it starts to have less resistance untill it finally gets to about 300 (+ or -) Ohm's when at running Temp (82 degrees)

how do i check the resistance.. its only got one connector on top of the sensor so do i connect the red lead on the multimeter to it, and earth the black one to the chassis? thanks

errrr ... That is the Temp sender unit for the Temperature gauge ... If you disconnect it,you will see the temp gauge on your dash fall to cold

The ECU temp sender unit is located at the front of the plentium, on the inlet valley manifold

If you follow & look at the front RH injector plug loom .... you will notice that a (extra) similar plug is hooked / connected to a sender unit .... That is the ECU temp sender

I have a photo of it somewhere ...

red to the tab on the sensor black to the side of the sensor where it screws in. Might pay to clean it up with a wire brush first.

Some sensor misreadings can be sorted by removing the sensor, cleaning out the threads with a chamber brush (the 5.56 one for the F88austyer is brilliant for it) adding some conductive sealing paste and putting it back in.
