The revised thinking is that they are not necessary at all (as per the later engines). The 20 lb ft torque is only to hold them in place and to fill the holes.

Read somewhere that the outer row of bolt should only be tightened to about 20 foot pounds max.

My book has 65 to 70 ft / lbs, there is a normal pattern with one special short bolt on the L/H side of the engine next to the dipstick tube. Talks about gradually tighten up to the specific torque in the correct order, thats all.

I use composite gaskets on my 3.9 , that do not have holes. I just leave them out and no problems for 6 years.
If you do put them in, as noted only tighten to 20Ft Lbs, as if tightened they can lift the inner sides of the heads and cause leaks into the valley from the chambers. I had a nice channel burned in one head when I removed them many years ago on an 81.
