    3.5lt rear main

Gday is it at all possible to replace the rear main on 3.5lt by not removing the gear box? and are they a rope seal or rubber?

    Cheers

    No.

The flywheel needs to be removed. The seal is an ordinary rubber seal.

depends what lifting equipment youve got but it may be easier taking the engine out.

Agree easier to take out the engine unless you have access to specialist transmission gear. They are a rubber seal.
Make sure you get a good quality seal, don't be tempted to put in one from the bearing supplies, even the seals in most gasket sets are poor quality and will leak again soon if not straight away. Had the motor out of my 88RR 3 times in as many weeks due to this a few years ago, straight after rebuilding including a reputable seal & gasket set.
Get a good parts supplier to track down one of the red rubber oil seals, can not for the life of me remember the name of the material only that it is red.
