Master cylinder bypassing internally?
If you hold pressure on the brake pedal does it sink to the floor? Either way I would be suspect of the master cylinder, they are cheap and easy to replace.
My brakes have suddenly become very faint and spongy at the pedal. When the pedal is pressed in it sometimes makes a sound as though air is being pushed out around the part that is connected to the pedal and goes thru the fire wall. (It has a rubber boot over it). It is also slow to spring back when pressed in or trying to "pump them".
Pressure does not seem to be the problem as it does not get much benefit from pumping and brake fluid seems to be maintained at the same level.
Any glues to where to start or check?

No the pedal doesnt sink but doesnt effect the brakes much. Hate to need to stop in an emergency. Brakes are still working although something is definately different under the pedal.
sounds like the diaphragm in the brake booster may have a hole in it
The pedal normally goes hard when that happens due to loss of vacuum assistance.

if it is a break master are they hard to replace? any tips or tricks?
wanting to know cause i think i need to do mine on an 85 rangie
Nothing hard in this, unbolt & bolt up. - bleeding the brakes afterwards is straightforward & there has been plenty of discussion in other parts of the forum about the best way to do this - do a search and check out some other responces, easier with two people, but can be done on your own with various devices & techniques.
Also don't spill the brake fluid all over the place - it makes a mess, and wrecks your paint.

if you are getting a hissing noise when you depress the pedal it will definately be the brake booster bet your house on it
you can buy a new diaphram but i've found its much easier to purchase a reconditioned booster fitting is simple
I have a similar problem with my 86 rangie.
When I press the pedal it gets very hard and makes a similar sound...cheap and easy fix being brake booster??
thanks all,
I will have a look around and see if I can pick one up somewhere, I suppose after 450,000 kms its not a bad innings for the original booster.
If anyone knows how to rebuild I might have a go at it or somewhere in Sydney that rebuilds.
